Orbis Ring Flash
« on: January 09, 2009, 08:54:55 pm »

I got a new toy for Christmas that is awesome - the Orbis Ring Flash. It creates the most beautiful light on faces. I got it mainly for photographing my children and I am really pleased. It gives that professional look to everyday photographs. The best part - it was only $160! I used a 5% discount code from this Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/orbisthursdays/

Has anyone else tried one and liked it?

It looks a (semi) nice bit of kit, but the last time I looked they didn't have any sort of bracket to attach it to the camera. So I'm not going to buy one until I can use it without using two hands. For the obvious macro application (or even consistent reproducable portrait) of such a unit having to hand hold it over the lens makes a mockery of the idea.

The bracket is going to be released soon.  Honestly, I am not sure I will get it.  I like holding it by hand for the kind of work I do.  You can also use it on your flash while it is mounted on a tripod or lightstand for use in the studio.  It works great and I love it.  Plus, you can use it on a wide variety of flashes.  For $160 (using that discount code) I am really pleased.
