White balance / colour issues 5Dmk2 sRAW
« on: January 09, 2009, 08:34:19 am »

Hi - this is the first time I've posted here.  Just got the 5D mk2 after four years experience with the 5D + 2 years with Leica M8 and many years with digital in one form or another.

My question concerns other's experience with sRAW on the 5D mk 2.  While white balance and overall IQ fully meet my expectations I'm disappointed with first attemots with sRAW1 under artificial light.  Full resolution images brought into Lightroom work beautifully, but I'm finding sRAW1 images are much darker and with a strong magenta cast.

Grateful if anyone else has experience or post-processing advice to get the most out of SRAW - I'm interested in this aspect of the camera as for a lot of documentary work I do I don't always need 21MP.

Thanks

Chris

Chris, we're currently working on some sRAW white balance fixes for Camera Raw and Lightroom. (These do not affect full raw images.)

There are basically 2 issues; one is related to the new firmware 1.0.7, the other is not.

ED - this is interesting.  I never tried the camera with firmware 1.0.6 having literally bought it yesterday - but I was disappointed by colour performance in sRAW.

BTW - when you say "we" is this you as a company, you as part of Canon, you as part of the Lightroom Team?  Interested to know as if there is a firmware issue that needs a fix from Canon, it will be good to get this information in the right place soon.

The joys of early adoption!

Ah ha!  Has anyone tried Phase 1 for 5D2 SRAW conversion - does it do a better job?  I'd much rather not start messing around with Canon's raw processor - that would be really tedious ..

"we" in my post above was referring to the Adobe Camera Raw engineering team.

Eric - thanks for keeping an eye on the forum and best wishes for your efforts.  If / when you get this sorted, will it be released through a dot update to LR / ACR?

Yes.

(Historically, on average Adobe produces 4 updates to Camera Raw per year.)

UPDATE - I've quickly tested 2.3 RC (download from Adobe Labs) and it now looks VERY good with sRAW - I've just shot a mix of artificial (low--energy bulb) + daylight shots and see no discernible difference betwee sRAW and RAW colour / tone.  Looks like this version of LR has fixed the problem - for which I'm very grateful as for some kinds of shoot I simply don't need the 21MP the 5D2 generates.

Appreciation to the LR team.

Eric, are there any camera profiles for the 5DII yet? I dl'd the LR 2.3 RC , the CR 5.2 plug in etc, camera profiles but don't see anything for the 5D II. Am I missing something?
