Sony 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Vario-Sonnar T*DT and Alpha 900

Is it possible to use the Sony 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Vario-Sonnar T* DT a (Alpha) lens on the alpha 900?. I believe this lens is made to be used on the less than full frame sony cameras. What would be its equivalent for use on the alpha 900 (same price range).

Thank you

It's possible but it's really not a great idea - you end up with roughly the same pixel density an a700 - approx 11mps Vs 12mps and the metering gets screwed up in many modes because most of the frame is black.

The equivalent lens is a tough one right now...  There's strong rumours of a 24-105 SSM G lens - we've found it in Sony product codes along with the now released 16-35 and 70-400 etc, we've seen a manual for it, we've seen it on slideshows alongside other released lenses...  But we've still not got it.  PMA in March?

The CZ 24-70 2.8 is pretty stunning - still getting used to mine but it appears to have better corner sharpness than a 50mm prime at f8.  It's heavy though.

We've got the 24-105 available, which is nice and cheap, but it's a step down in terms of build from anything G rated or the big CZs.  About the same as the CZ 16-80 buildwide - optics are said to be decent without blowing you away.

Finally the old Minolta 28-135 is making a comeback - ebay only but maybe you'll like it.

Aside from those you've got the usual raft of Sigmas, Tamron, a couple of KMs, Tokinas...  Same as you would with any other brand.
