5D and 5D II Accessories

I have a 5D and am considering the 5DII. Do the right angle eyepiece, focusing screen and cable release for the 5D work on the 5DII. I will be listing the 5D and do not want to sell the items that will work on the 5DII.

The cable release will work not sure on the right angle viewer.
The vertical grip also won't work.

The angle finder should work, since it works for almost every other EOS camera. I have a Hoodman finder that fit my Rebel XTi, and it now fits the 5D MkII using the same adapter.

Measure the width of bare eyepiece square on your 5D. If it is 24 mm wide, the Canon angle finder will fit. (Looking at it from the top, if you measure the inside grooves, it should be 18 mm.)

I have one of the Hoodman right angle viewers too, but I rarely use it. I hate how the right angle viewfinder converts the rectangle to a little circle compared to the rectangular eye piece. Has anyone gotten around that  limitation?

Not here. On the tripoded 5D I use the viewfinder (with a -4 diopter so my nearsighted eyes can see what the *@&$! I'm shooting) to compose and rough focus, then detach the diopter (into one vest pocket it goes, out of another comes the Canon Right Angle Finder C), and attach the angle finder at max magnification to fine-focus. Then off comes the angle finder, into the vest pocket it goes, and onto the viewfinder goes a swatch of gaffer's tape to seal out the light. On cold-hands days, things are dropped -- but it's even more fumblesome with gloves .

It remains to be seen if the Live View screen of my on-order 5DII will revise this routine.

Well I mean looking through the Hoodman the view becomes circular not rectangular. Are you saying that the Canon right angle finder provides a rectangular view? If that's true, I have a brand new Hoodman Right Angle viewfinder for sale. Used once.

The view is rectangular if magnification is set 1.25x but it becomes circular at the 2.5x setting.

I never saw that on my Rebel XTi: rectangular in both 1x and 2.5x mode. Just checked my 5D MkII, and in the normal 1X setting, the view is rectangular, but with it set to 2.5X the left and right sides of the frame are curved.

I know the few things that will not work:

1. the battery;

2. the charger;

3. the battery grip;

4. the alternative finder screen;

5. the Arca-Swiss style body plates ("L-" or the normal types, with or without the battery grip, from either RRS or Kirk).

The 5D batteries (BP-511A) will not work in the 5D2 at all? Or will they work, only without the "power-remaining" and battery I.D. functions?

@ dwdallam  -- francois' comment above is correct, with your eye well down into the cup, the Canon Angle Finder C gives a full image of the viewfinder, including the shooting info readout, at 1.25x; a circular crop of the scene at 2.5x. (My angle finder on/angle finder off routine is purely personal idiosyncrasy, from long habit of looking straight through the viewfinder to compose. I've tried leaving the angle finder attached, but composing through it just never "stuck." Not a problem with the angle finder itself, however.) At 1.25x you'll notice a slightly darker image, a bit of light dropoff on the periphery, and a bit of barrel distortion, but otherwise a good, strong image. At 2.5x there's no doubt about focus.

Yep that's right. I guess I either had it in 2.5 mode or thought it was still not that open, which is isn't. At least i can see the rectangular view now, but only if I move my eye around somewhat. Thanks for the tip. I have an old/new piece of equipment now :0

Correct, they will not work at all. Major bummer, I have lots of 5D batteries, can't find anyone yet who can sell me spare's for the 5DMII. Come on Canon, get them over on the boat ASAP!
