Problems Capture One Pro 4.5.2 Canon 5Dm2 Odd Color
« on: December 20, 2008, 08:23:03 pm »

Hi,

I have had some trouble with the new Canon 5Dm2 using Capture One Pro 4.5.2  I think I remember reading that maybe that the support for the 5Dm2 is preliminary but it has major problems.  The image appears almost like it has been cross processed.  Everything is set at the default settings.  The same file looks fine in DPP.  We have shot tests with the 5D and the 5Dm2 of the same scene side by side and they are wildly different.  I guess my question is has anybody else had a problem like this?  I know this is a new camera and program.  We have been great fans of Capture One Pro 3xxx for years and jumped to the new version of Capture 4 because it supported the new 5Dm2.  Any ideas?

Thanks

John

PhaseOne's 5DMKII profile was based on a pre-production model. Their user forum has details. Apparently, they will be making a new one with and include it with an update.

The PhaseOne user forum has a post from Uli that an update will be available before Christmas and he's clarified that he means Christmas of THIS year!  (That is in a post there about Canon G10 support.)

We can only hope that the updated 5DII support will be there also.  In another thread he did say that would be coming.

Currently the 5DII support is AWFUL!!!  (And I'm hating the switch from 3.7 to 4.x Pro.)  I really don't understand what I'm seeing with C1Pro 4.5.1...  from a studio session images all shot within seconds of each other (same lighting, same exposure, etc. with only a different pose from the model) all look drastically different.  With BreezeBrowser Pro the CR2 files all look pretty perfect and very uniform but in C1Pro they're all different.  Some have such a major green cast to them that it's just about impossible to correct them.

Believe it or not, I've resorted to temporarily using PhotoMatix (the HDR tool) to convert my 5DII raw images to 16-bit .tif files.  That's slow and more awkward than using C1Pro but at least the results are useable.  SIGH

I'm having the same problems...  I'm stuck with DPP, though, as I haven't got any of the other things that will work with the files.

FYI, there's an update from Uli in the MAC forum that says that they have delayed the release of the CO update until after the new year, so as to not make their R&D people work over the holidays.

Speaking of work, mine's piling up.

Cheers,
Hugh

Has anyone tried to convert the 5D2 raw file in DNG and process that with C1? All features of C1 should remain unchanged, but the color is dictated by the DNG converter.

Hi Hugh!  Best of the season to you!  Haven't heard from you in a long time.  Don't forget to let me know when/if you come through Montreal again.

What a drag that the updated version is delayed.  Those programmers should be CHAINED to their workstations and not released until the product is done.  Looks like I have no choice but to use something else.  Guess I'll have to install DPP and try that (PhotoMatix is just too awkward for anything other than HDR work).

Gabor: A friend of mine who doesn't own (or want) C1Pro is using the Adobe DNG convert to process his 5DII raw files.  He's then opening those in ACR (which he swears by).  And he's a meticulous craftsman who does incredible work.  I've never tried DNG and hadn't thought of using them with C1Pro.  Would they work (do you know) with C1Pro 3.7x?  I'm so far really not enjoying 4.x.

Happy (and safe) Holidays, Everyone!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses.  I have never been a fan of DDP except for being able to do some things that Capture One does not.  I have used C1-Pro for several years and really like it.  I'm not sure if all the new bells and whistles are what I need.  It seems just when you get a program figured out they make changes.  They hide things that used to be in the open and add things you don't care about.  I would still be happy with 3.79 if I could change the background of the program from white to gray and you could use the new 5Dm2 :-)  Oh well it's great to know that the people at Phase still care about us guys that shoot on a platform other that there Phase backs.

I have a 5D 2 and am waiting for the new version of capture one. In the meantime, I have been using ACR in Photoshop CS4, and it seems to do a beautiful job on the files.

Thanks DavidP

I should get my copy of CS 4 next week.  I'm still sold of Capture One for my raw conversions but I always want to have other options.

Hey Guys,

Just got the new 4.6 download and the raw images are much improved.  I will have to get to the studio to see how this new version works.

Thanks

John

As noted in the MFDB section, and in the above post C1 4.6 was released with full raw compatibility with 5D Mark II files including sraw1 and sraw2.
