Emotion 54LV weird behaviour... any tips?

I would like to share my recent experience with the Emotion 54LV and ask to the forum members who own the same back if they have found a similar issue.

It happens sometimes that the back saves images both on CF and internal memory even if in the settings menu the choice is set to "only CF". It has happened with white reference shots sometimes, so when I downloaded the CF images I found some of them missing, then I found them on the internal memory. It has happened with normal images too.

Today I have upgraded the back to firmware 5.07. I will have some other tests today.

Maybe it was a fault of the previous firmware? It had the 5.01 version installed.

I am not aware of such a fault with the eMotion back, respectively with a previous firmware. If it happens again, please note carefully what you are doing and your exact settings and let our tech know, via our distributor.

I have encountered this too, but it was my fault as I was taking a lot of pictures quite quickly and had turned the back off while the internal memory was still writing to the card.

Nowadays I leave the back on for a few minutes before turning it off...

I use an eMotion 22 and  understand that the 45LV is re-engineered, but,  I have had similar behaviour when I am shooting long exposures and making a lot of black reference files. The back seems to take more time to process these exposures and then save them to the CF card. It seems  that the making of a new exposure may interrupt the process of saving to the CF card and the back determines that the CF card is busy and puts the image on the internal storage. That is just my guess, but I find that if I wait until the image has been recorded onto the CF card before making the next exposure it does not happen. Of course if this is not convenient, just shoot to the internal storage.

Of course, interrupting the writing process is never a good idea.

I do not know this particular back, but a little about the other Sinar back. I would not be astonished if you have a indicator light on your back, showing in your display perhaps, that will tell you when the writing of files is finished, may be switching from red to green or the likes? Not sure though.

There is a red light in the card bay, so you can see when the writing process is finished.

Makes perfect sense to me, my understanding is, that if a file is still in the writing process, and I shoot a new exposure, I am using the 75LV btw., regardless wether I chose to write to CF card in the settings, the software will "realise" that the shot can not be transferered to the card and utilises the inernal memory as "buffer" instead, hence you do not loose a picture.

Today I have learned a lot!  

First that the back as soon as I make a very fast shot even though it is saving the other one on CF, keep the new one on the internal memory and then write it to CF. So no problem with delay in firing, I think yesterday I have gone also out of space with the CF card. Thanks Carl, David and Laughingbear.

Then there is the red light that I found it for the first time today looking into the CF bay (never opened it when working). The good thing is that the image number on the display become red when the back use the CF, so another indicator to solve my troubles. Thanks Graham.

Might even want to try some faster CF cards so you don't have to wait as long for it to finish writing. Extreme III from Sandisks are very quick and come in varies sizes. I use 16gb CFcards now and seem very solid

I will try. I'm using Sandisk Ultra II right now, with the Canon was enough but now it can be a bottleneck.

Might even want to try some faster CF cards so you don't have to wait as long for it to finish writing. Extreme III from Sandisks are very quick and come in varies sizes. I use 16gb CFcards now and seem very solid
