4gb microdrive...

I welcome the 4GB drives as well, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Firsly, these will not work in all cameras. The camera's OS needs to know how to read and write to a FAT 32 file directory. At the moment only the Canon 1Ds and, I believe, the Kodak DCS bodies and backs know how to do this. Future cameras likely will all have this capability.

The other concern is putting so many eggs (or images) in one small basket. Between 400 and a thousand frames on one card is an awful lot to put at risk. I think I'd rather have 4 1GB cards than 1 4GB card, just from this perspective.

Also, 1GB Microdrives have become incredably inexpensive. Under $250 many places.

I bought an IBM 1G microdrive for $219.99 at

www.d-store.com/#navi0

It's the cheapest I've found so far.

Link on 4gb microdrive that supposedly will be available by the end of the year:

I think this would make me finally move to microdrive, and keep my 512mb CFs as backups.....depending on how much they want to charge for such a nice chunk of memory.

Ya, and I guess that I'd have to have the Delkin Picture Pad plugged in, in order to download a complete drive with out losing power.

Still, it looks like it (or something like it) might be the ticket for Canon Ds and post-Canon Ds cameras, as they crunch out larger and larger files.  Should be interesting.

D-Store is having a "Father's Day Sale" on IBM 1GB microdrives. I purchased 2 for 176.00 each plus an additional $4.99 for a PCMIIA card adapter so that I can read the microdrives and solid state CF cards in my laptop.

I placed my order online and received the goods 2 days later. Shipping was only $9.83 and no sales tax. A very good deal!

The PCMIIA card is much faster than using USB 1.1 with my new Canon 10D. My Dell laptop is a few years old and doesn't have a firewire port.
