NX2 Crashes on Win XP Pro Notebook
« on: August 02, 2008, 08:35:10 am »

I have successfully installed and am running NX2 on a Windows Vista desktop machine.  I cannot, however, get it to run on my Windows XP notebook.  It crashes right after it loads.  I have completely uninstalled the program, as well as uninstalled the previous version (NX) and the Nik ColorEfex filters, I downloaded the program again, and turned off everything I can think of (Anti-virus, etc.) but it still crashes.

Has anyone else had this problem, or, more importantly, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to fix it?

You may want to look at the following site:

http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=176373

Look at the second item in the forum on  how to tune your computer for NX2. It seems to have helped a lot of people. It involves being sure of the .Net installation and the Visual C++ installation.  If you always update the service packs, etc.. most of this stuff should be up to date. You might want to try what they suggest. I have all the updated files installed (.Net and C++) with service packs and I have an old (5 yr) computer. 1.5 ghz, 1.5g ram and NX 2 runs fairly well. I don't do a lot of batching or heavy (D lighting) processing and the speed is OK. Hope this helps

Mike,

This information was very useful.  Unfortunately, NX2 still crashes on my notebook.  I followed the instructions meticulously, but no luck.

The notebook that I am using is my work machine, which includes a docking station that connects to my office network.  Therefore, it has office software on it, including Novell GroupWise software, that might be interfering with the running of NX2.  I may have my IT guy take a crack at it at some point.  For now, it is just not working at all.  Too bad.

(NX1 still works.)

Update:

Problem solved.

A poster on the NikonCafe forum suggested that I look at my My Pictures directory and delete any TIFF images that were there.  I had never put any images there, so I did not think that this would work.  When I checked, however,  a handful of Tiff images were in that directory.  Turns out that they were sample images that were put there when I installed ScanSoft OmniPage, a business oriented scanning program that came with my office scanner.

After I deleted the images, NX2 loaded.  It seems that, when NX2 is first installed and then launched, it automatically looks to the My Pictures directory for files.  Sometimes, it cannot open the files that are there, so it crashes.  In this case, the sample business documents were images of office document that NX2 apparently could not recognize, so the program crashed.  Once I removed those files, the program ran.
