32GB CF with P30
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:20:26 pm »

I ordered a 32GB Compact Flash card but have difficulty to formatting it properly.

When formatting it within the DB, the card is formatted into a 8 GB

Was I too quick to order a card this big, or is there a way to use itsfull storage?

Thnx

Firmware 2.5.2/1.2.5

The card is a "no brand" from a seller with high reputation.

I think I did one mistake in the beginning: I inserted it into my Canon 5D -- it saw the 32GB capacity -- and formatted the card in the camera. The card formatted into 8GB.

After this all attempts in the computer or in P30 don't make it bigger than 8GB.

Have you tried reformatting it with Disk Utility?

2 answers:

1: you must upgrade the firmware on your 5D and or P30 - old firmware doesn't recognise the new ultra- large cards. its not hard to do and pretty straightforward. do it on the 5D first (use a different CF card) and follow the instructions Canon give. Then try to re-format the 32Gb, and see what happens. Formatting in a canon and then a DB should make no difference, you have done nothing wrong.

2: if 1 doesn't work, and the 5D still shows 8Gb only, then you have a faulty or counterfeit card. This is not as unusual as it sounds. if it was a really cheap card that seems too good a deal to be true - it probably was. Move fast on this, you have 30days with PayPal only to get your money back. There'sa lot of bad cards out there with false capacitiies, and even if they are the size they say, they write at the speed of a snail, and are near unusable. avoid. best to get known brand cards from a proper US supplier. I speak from experience!

Thanks, it worked. My 5D with upgraded firmware formatted the card as 32GB, and my P30 recognized this capacity.

The only strange thing is: P30 keeps advising me to format the card in DB for best performance. I do, but the advice persists.

ok - very good, now see how fast it writes (or slow) compared to other quality cards, then you can decide if you want to keep it or not! some cheap cards are inordinately slow...
