i just went on the dell website, they have a couple of monitors with "displayport". does anyone know anything about this new standard? apparently it is 2x better than DVI. true?

yes i know murray i saw that website, and they also have a wiki entry. what i am curious about is whether there any photographers-digital imagers who can give their opinion as to the worth of this new technology.

I didn't read it as 2x better, meaning color quality. What I see it as is greater bandwidth and 2 way communication between the monitor and device, which opens up capabilities currently not possible with DVI, such as larger pixel counts, device feedback (touch screen or self calibrating all in one cable).

As long as we're talking about a purely *digital* interface there is not going to be any "quality" difference between the two.

A DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200, while a DVI dual link can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600. The TMDS 165Mhz transmitter at each end of each link consumes a fair amount of power - making this problematic for notebooks. The physical connector is expensive to make and relatively fragile.

DisplayPort is currently capable of up to 10.8Gbps of bandwidth. The USB style connector is reliable and cheap to manufacture.

wayne i was quoting the dell website, "The benefits of DisplayPort include:Twice the performance of DVI for higher resolutions, color depths and refresh rates"

that was why i was asking, i am quite skeptical about this claim.

I´ve been annoyed a few times over this trying to get a good picture on my HD Projector running a 10 meter long HDMI cable.. I wish the industry or the consumers where better informed so that we all would be using HD-SDI instead for all our digital video...

I run a cheap monoprice HDMI 8-meter cable to my 720p projector without problems. Do you have a 1080p?

I have a 1080p projector, a Panasonic PT-AE2000U and playing Blueray movies from a PS3.
Had to try out three or four cables before I found one that didn´t produce any blur or ringing artifacts. The cable cost me around 1000 SEK about 165 USD.

Yeah, thought so - 1080p is notoriously difficult through long HDMI cables. I have its little brother AX-200E (you have the US version?). I don't have a light-controlled room and even the AX-200 doesn't have enough oomph in the afternoons.

Next time you buy cables, I recommend monoprice. I got a thirty meters of speaker cable, two HDMI cables, DVI cables, and some other misc cables for a bit more than you paid for that single cable. This was after paying for import taxes from the US (I live in the Netherlands). They have cables which reportedly work fine with long (~10m or so) lengths and 1080p sources.

Oops, sorry, I have the PT-AE2000E, the European version.
Thanks for the tip, I'll see if there are any stores here selling monoprice for the future.
