Canon 1Ds vs. Mark II

I jumped on the 1Ds when it first came out because of the full frame sensor.  I have not always been totally satisfied with the color rendition , and find my Canon Powershot A640 gives better color with less correction in PS.

I have been thinking of upgrading to the 1Ds Mark II and am wondering if the processor gives better color than the older IDs.  I can get along quite nicely with the pixel count and speed of the IDs so the color is my only consideration.

Any suggestions from anyone with experience in both models would be appreciated.

What not considr a 5D? Nice colour from that camera, cheaper and a lot lighter too.

I stepped up to the 1DS3 from a 5D and I strongly believe that the 5D is still an amazing camera. If the 5D had more pixels, for cropping, I may have waited for the update to it.

the 1DS3, however, does give me that head room to crop nicely when needed, such as on people portraits,. I crop very little on landscape and otehr types of photography because I'm able to take my time and compose just as I want. too, doing people photography in a fast paced situation means you can get a wider shot, say 3/4, but when you crop in you may have a very nice head shot--and still have 240ppi at 9x12. Very nice!

But back to your problem. I too put my vote in for the 5d, unless you need a sealed camera. It's nice. Very nice.

I have the 1DS 3, previously the 1DS MK2. The colour out of the camera is slightly richer, I do prefer this.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the self cleaning sensor , it is not that brilliant.

Screen viewing is a massive bonus, is it worth the upgrade? I think so.

i like the files out of the 1dsmk1, they are sharper and i think the colour is good than the mk2  (but my shots have a lot of retouching, so colour balance isnt that big a deal). as long as the iso is low, i think the mk1 would give the mk 2 a run for its money.
but i really like my latest update, the mk3 really is quite nice. it has some major problems (ie, tethering), but i find the files are very thick, the colour can be twisted quite a lot.

I haven't cleaned my sensor yet, and didn't even clean it out of the box. had multiple field changes on the back of a backpack and not one bit of dust yet. Yeah, that sensor cleaning does work, at least compared to my 5D. From my perspective, that's definitely one of the big deals about this camera. You know, just about every time you change lenses, you got a dust problem. Some of that can be helped by blowing the sensor with each change, but then you have to keep your rocket blower on you and do a sensor blow each lens change. If you don't do lots of changes, or you're in a studio, then it's not that big of a deal.

If you don't want a 1Ds3 I'd second the 5D. Still a great camera.

After doing some color testing on the my old 1Ds I decided to keep it and not use AWB but set Custom WB instead.  I have to sell quite a few prints to pay for a new camera so am going to try to make this work and then possibly go to the MarkIII when they come up used.

Thanks for the input.  It did help me research options and make up my mind.
