1Ds mk III Owners - Viewfinder Alignment
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:50:36 pm »

I'm sorry to post another thread about the 1Ds 3, and I'm mindful there is a thread already posted regarding this same subject, but each thread appears to be taken off tangent and with no definitive answer.

I'm hoping for a definitive thread to state whose cameras are having problems, if you've had your camera repaired, and what work was carried out?

I've spoken to my local repair centre but they're yet to come across the problem. I'm hoping to provide them with as much information as possible before I send mine in for repair.

According to Canon, it's an easy fix. The problem is a mask in the viewfinder. It's fitted with four screws, that should be tightened in a certain order to fix it correctly, just like the bolts on the wheels of a car. Apparently, some guy used the wrong order on a certain batch of cameras, and the result is that the mask shifted a little. It explains why only some cameras have this problem, and why the degree is different in each one.

I had this problem with my 1ds III and Canon fixed it. It is actually the viewfinder/mirror alignmnet that can be off according to Canon. What you need to do is create a few sample files of the rotated imagery. Shoot something square and grid like as a sample. Send that in with a letter to Canon repair in NJ or CA depending on your location. They are trying to do returns in 3 days.
Best,
Dana

Hi Dana,

I'm actually in the UK, so wouldn't send it to NJ etc, but thank you for your advice

Did Canon send to you any form of statements as to what repairs were carried out?

Also, do you by any chance have the name of the person who carried out the works to your camera?
