+5 closeup filter on EF 24-105mm
« on: March 24, 2008, 12:58:15 pm »

For some time now I've been using a B&W +5 closeup filter on my Canon 24-105mm f/4 IS for some macro work. Obviously this leaves a little be desired in terms of deeper DOF.

I'm considering purchasing a dedicated macro lens and have heard good things about the Canon 100mm macro but wonder if the 180mm is more the range I need. My question is will the minimum focal distance make up for the +5 magnification at 105mm? What would be the mm equivalent of 105mm combined with a +5 closeup filter?

There's a significant price differential between the two so I thought I'd seek advice...

Thanks!

whether you need the 180 over the 100 depends on what you're shooting and whether you're using a full frame camera - i suggest you do a search as there have been a number of discussions on these lenses

i like the 100mm - reasonable size, price, and an excellent lens.  i would not recommend a simple diopter with this lens, but the Canon 500D will maintain IQ.  the Kenko pro 1.4x converter also works well with the lens and maintains autofocus (the Canon extenders do not work) - on a 40D this results in a 224mm equivalent (of course the lens will be a 160 equivalent on the 40D).

to maintain focus range, i prefer to use the extender, then add the 500D rather than use extension tubes

I'm using a 20D to photograph jewelry. Mostly rings. My current setup fills the frame nicely.

with the 20D you should be completely satisfied with the 100 macro
