New Computer setup

Can someone explain to me the best way to transfer all of my programs/files etc to a new computer. Both old and new are Dell notebooks running Vista. I can reinstall my Adobe stuff but I'm at a loss as to how I should get my catalogue across. Thank you very much

Don't attempt to transfer the programes.  You need to reinstall all programes from the installation disks, and then update to the latest versions etc.

Your data you must transfer.  The simplest way to do this is via an external disk drive.  Simply copy the data to the external drive from the old machine, and then move the drive and copy it to the new - or just continue to use it on the external drive.

You are backing up your data arn't you!   If not, external drives are the way to go, so you can continue to us ethe drive aonce the copy is finished.

Don't forget you email folders.

If you're running recent Adobe programs, don't forget to de-activate on your old computer.

Most installable programs will also install from the internal disk if you have the program archived correctly. This means, in most cases, that you can lock up the actual disks somewhere and use the archive/zip file from your external/backup drive instead. This is not only convenient, but also a critically important preservation of software you've invested your valuable time in. I generally just zip the CD contents into a file (i.e. LLV1.zip) and then back up the file to the external drive.
