z3100 minimum roll width
« on: January 21, 2008, 07:35:02 pm »

Is there any way around the 18" minimum roll width on the z3100, other
than manually cutting sheets of the roll?

Thanks for any ideas,

Bill

Bill, the minimum is 11.4 inches.  Ernst Dinkla has tested this thoroughly.

Yes if you try it will be around 28,5cm where you'll find the touchy point of custom page set ups.
These have to be set up as custom page set ups, as the standard page description file doesn't have any of these short roll widths. Although if enough people asked HP could easily modify the page description for these sizes.

Hi Ron-

That's what I thought, and at first I was worried that some sensor was out; then I looked at the HP printer owner's manual(revised 10/07), and it says 18" minimum roll width, for both 24" and 44" z3100.

I'll keep looking into this, will call service today.

I’m trying to print out panoramas, some of which, when printed as a 9” high image, would be 8’ long.  These would print out nicely on an 11” roll, with a 1” margin all around, if only the Z3100 would accept it.  Oddly, I can cut a 5’ length of 11” wide paper from a roll and print on that, so I know the Z3100 will work with 11” media.  If I try anything longer than about 5’ the printer says it’s too long and rejects the paper load.  I fail to see why the printer will accept media 5’ long, but no longer.

Neil, do you know who I might contact at HP to try to get this corrected?  I’m sure that I’m not the only one trying to make long panoramas, and it seems to me this would be a minor adjustment in Z3100 software.

I suppose an alternative would be to use 11.4” rolls, if I could find them.  Anyone have a source, in the US, for rolls of good bright white matte, 11.4” wide?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

Check out this previous thread on print length.

Just a thought but you could print two panos side by side on 24" wide paper.  Then your only problem is figuring out how the heck you're going to cut the paper.  Sorry...

Neil's solution must be the best as it will be difficult to keep an 11.4" roll straight over the 8' length in printing. That must also be the reason that HP decided to limit minimum roll width to 11,4" and limit the sheet length to 5 feet. A 24' roll print 8' long could be cut over the length with something like a film splitter design: a razor blade in a board if it has to be cheap, a rotary cutter + a bearing to run on if it can be more expensive.

You could fool the printer paper sensor by taping a white sheet at the front next to the paper you want to print, slightly overlapping. I wouldn't recommend it as you probably waste a lot of paper by prints that were not kept straight.

What focal length makes a panorama of 9" by 8' ?

Ron, Ernst, thanks for the replies.  I’m trying to avoid trimming the paper.  It seldom turns out well, especially over those lengths.  As for keeping the paper straight while printing, I would think that paper coming off a roll would be kept straighter than something just hanging off the back of the printer.  The roll acts as a guide to keep the back end straight.  Even without that, over the 5’ length, my Z3100 does a very good job.  I’m sure it would do just as well over 8’, and I’d like the option to try that.

As for the focal length, the panoramas are approximately 25 stitched images, shot with a 6Mp Pentax *ist D, oriented vertically, with a 50mm lens.
