Hi Stefan
I haven't got yet, my 1ds mk3, but if the shutter works the same as 1ds mk2, than the problem is with the studio flash duration that can affect the evenness of the exposed pictures at 1/160 and above. It is best to shoot even illuminated, white paper, use short duration studio flash, in different shutter speeds 1/160, 1/200, 1/250 and measure the evenness of the frame sides with PS pipette. Than, you can decide what studio flash and shutter speeds, suits you best.
Best regards

Wireless triggers can reduce the fastest usable shutter speed you can get without vignetting. With a fast strobe and wired triggering you can shoot at 1/250 or sometimes a bit faster before vignetting starts being an issue. But if you're using a strobe with a long flash duration or a cheap wireless trigger that introduces a long triggering delay, the shutter will start to close before the flash pulse is over.

I've done a lot of shooting (5000+ frames) at 1/250 with Canon 1-series bodies using Alien Bees triggered with Pocket Wizards without shutter vignetting. Your results may vary depending on the brand of your strobes and how you trigger them. As reissme says, test with your equipment to be sure. But with the right equipment, 1/250 can be achieved consistently.

This talk makes me wonder if it isn't possible to make a device that triggers the shutter release and a strobe with user-adjustable timing differences between them, to optimize the timing.  I wished for something similar a few years back when someone told me of a workshop he was doing where they were strobing dancers mid-ambient exposure while they jumped, but one needed a leaf-shutter camera to do it properly.  Such a device could allow you to place the strobe flash at any point in time you want.

I noticed a couple of years ago that my Canon 10D, which advertises a max sync speed of 1/200, actually does quite well with a direct PC connection to a small Morris flash at 1/250, and only loses a small strip of the frame at 1/320.

I shoot with a 5d,  Profoto d4 and multimax, but i canot get over 1/200 without getting a black stripe. i will have to play around with the pretrigger settings of the multimax, maybe i get a 1/250. i wonder wehter the 1ds is any different in that matter. if i get 1/250, it will be another blow against my decision to go MF

I just tried it out, by adjusting the delay i can only make the blackout broader, which makes sense, as i'd rather need a kind of pre-trigger.

John: would you share your PW settings with us?
