Leica 21 F4 R on 5D ?
« on: October 20, 2007, 03:56:04 pm »

Hi,

Exacerbated by the lack of a decent wide angle for use with the 5D for landscapes, I'd like to go the adapter route and try out some other makes of lenses. I hear and have seen fabulous reviews of the Zeiss 21mm lens, but it's out of my price range.

Has anyone used the Leica 21mm F4 R lens on the 5D? I know it's compatible with the mirror, but haven't heard from anyone what the quality is like for sharpness / landscapes.

It's a shame that Canon does a nice job of lenses from 35mm upwards. I'm very happy with the 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100 macro. But anything sub 35mm is soft.

No experience with the 21, but have used the latest 28/2.8 (built in hood) on the 5D and it is sweet. Natural color, shap across the frame and 'pops' into focus - even with the crap 5D stock screen.  Might not be wide enough for your purposes however. The 19/2.8 R is considered by many R shooters as the best ultra wide around.

The 24x36" prints I make from a 16-35f2.8L II from 1DsII files would indicate that this lens is not exactly crap--and I am not an easy person to please.

As they once said on Ford commercials, "have you tried a Canon lately"?

I have the 21-35 Asph which I love and get beautiful 17x24s, the largest I can currently print, but they look as sharp and contrasty as the 11x17s, which is to say very, corner to corner at my small shooting apertures. Having said that I have recently started using the Zeiss 17-35 2.8 N instead, which I also love and looks at least as good, and can fully couple with the 1Ds2 (after conversion) so no stop-down metering pain.

This is the place to get Contax N lenses converted:

http://conurus.com

You can get the prices there. He currently does the 17-35, 24-85, 100 and 70-300. You get full EOS coupling including AF.

Cheers!
