Thanks for the review James, there is nothing like a real hands on in the heat of the action!

The D3 looks more and more like the ultimate point and shoot camera.

I am thinking of replacing my Canon Ixus 900IS with one.

It certainly looks like fierce competition for Canon.

I've been waiting to replace my own EOS 20D until I could choose from something that's significantly better at autofocus, viewfinder and reproduction of shadows and darker tones, since I tend to do a bit of photography like this:

(EOS 1D MkII @ISO 1600, slightly over-exposed, minimal NR)

Judging by the darker image areas in the ISO 6400 basketball picture (Warning! 6 MB+!) posted on Rob Galbraith's site, the Nikon D3 may be good enough in terms of shadows and dark tones at ISO 3200 to compete with the 20D at 800, which indicates that it's better than the 1D MkIII for this use.

James's report nails it regarding autofocus and the viewfinder.

But it's quite an investment for an amateur photographer to change systems, even if I get a decent price for my current lenses, and is it better for my use for those three key indicators than the 1D MkIII?

I think I see myself renting gear to find out ...

Interesting article and more interesting photos; they have a terrific quality to them. I know they're real (in the sense that they were shot at an actual event) but they almost look more like set-up MF shots. And that's good. Really good.

OK so I guy who really likes Nikon likes the new Nikon.

I liked James' contributions in the Medium Format Digital Back forum but when he left after disagreeing with Michael over the "Lolita" affair, I thought he was so fed up with LL because he did make sure Michael "unregistered" him. I wonder why the need to write a "review" on the D3 to be placed on LL now?

Also shot only jpegs. I got the impression he liked the camera principally because it saved him time. He got images he liked with in-camera processing. Also, auto-focussing and auto-exposure were accurate most of the time.

For the professional, I gues time is money.

Fuji is making money with the S5Pro mostly with people shooting jpg, there really is a very significant market for this.

Only crazy fine art guys bother with raw!

Maybe he just needed time to cool down. Maybe after a while it wasn't such a big deal. At any rate, they put aside their differences. Once Nikon gave him this opportunity he really didn't have anywhere else to put it so maybe it was a peace offering. Who knows (besides those two), who cares, the review was great. As a Canon shooter it made me take notice.

If james is saying that he took those images as JPEG....the camera is a more serious threat to Adobe than Canon!

It's not labeled a review on LL, it's called a "first impressions field report". The author is also very up-front about the fact that he's never written a camera review before and that he's not attempting any type of detailed comparisons etc. I thought he was very clear about the fact that he was only giving his subjective judgement of the camera.

He states quite clearly that they are post processed for a client--he wasn't able to share 'out of the camera' jpegs as its a preproduction body.

Maybe you were writing with tongue in cheek, though, and that's hard to tell LOL.

But yeah, shooting raw's too much extra work for most people ... and I also thought it was a good straight-forward article, no hidden agendas. Let's not deny him the right to enjoy what he's using!
