PS File Incompatibility

I'd like to know what file formats, if any, are incompatible between Photoshop CS1, CS2 & CS3. I've got hundreds of archived files in both TIFF and PSD formats from a few decades of work and can't find the information on Adobe's web site. I'm looking to possibly migrate the data through CS3.

Is the PSD format from CS1 compatible with that of CS3?
How 'bout the TIFF format?

Thanks! I've read other articles and blogs with the same consensus (TIFF being the preferred file format) but without knowing the internal Adobe corporate info. I like the logic of using an open format as a precaution against file format obsolescence.

In terms of archiving files, I never compress anything which is why we've used the PSD format in recent years. The files to be archived, even with layers and paths, were smaller in size that the corresponding TIFF and opened faster in Photoshop.

Does anyone turn on zip compression when archiving TIFF files?
Is the zip algorithm subject to change without notice (thus possibly rendering the compressed files inaccessible)?
