Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 Lens
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:28:33 pm »

Came across this bit of news: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/news/news.asp?nID=3306 about a lens that Sigma has in prototype.  It was shown at PMA as can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K77UvaiHii0

Looks to be about 3 feet long, maybe more, and I'd hate to guess the weight.  The Hassleblad 300mm f/2.8 lens weighs, if memory serves, about eight pounds and this one dwarfs that.  Might be nice to hang on the wall, but I can't see a really practical purpose.  Even for sports photographers, managing the thing looks like quite a feat!

According to akam.no's PMA report (Norwegian text, sorry), these are the vitals for the 200-500 f/2.8:

 - 14.96 kg
 - 65 cm long
 - 25 cm diameter
 - 2.2 kg lens shade(!)
 - Price: "you pay - we make"

Downside: no IS ...

It is now listed on the Sigma US web site. No price.
It is also the wrong color. Something this big I don't know if it should be in olive drab so it looks like a missile launcher!

That is a good point.  I bet the conversation with the local constabulary over the use of said instrument would be vigorous.

No problem! You can be far enough away that you don't need to interact with them!

Besides, I can now keep a spare missile launcher labeled "Sigma" just in case the constabulary starts waving and pointing and stuff.

Just paint over "Sigma" with "FFV Ordinance" or something like that, and tape a laser pointer to the side...

Hi!

Some special reason you prefer "FFV Ordnance"?  :-)
