z3100 & Quad Black printing

I brought this up before and I'm curious if anyone has info regarding the specifics of "quad black" printing. Perhaps someone in contact or working with HP can ask them about it.

In the last HP document "Working with Custom Papers", there is a reference to "Quad Black" printing only on the "Fine Art paper >250 g/m2" paper type preset. Meaning of course that the smaller dot of the Photo Black is not used on other matte media.
It was my understanding that "Quad Black" printing was available on all matte media. (I was hoping to use quad black on canvas and other matte papers)

Amadou Diallo responded that he thought this must be a mistake.


Any thoughts?

The printing I've done using FAP250 has produced very dissatisfactory blotchy blacks.  However, I've only tried uncoated media with this profile thus far.  YMMV.

Are you aware that with the Fine Art Paper >250 setting you are asking for the highest ink load the driver can put out? And that an uncoated paper typically requires a reduction in ink load? Dissatifactory, splotchy blacks would be a "best case" result in the scenario you describe. At worst, you could have ink literally running off the paper.

This looks like a mistake to me, as well. Quad black should be available for many more paper types than the single one listed. I'm checking with HP to confirm.

Most of my printing at the moment is monochromatic/sepia tones, on Enhanced Matte using the litho-realistic media type, and I've noticed the Photo Black ink level hasn't moved much or at all compared to the matte black.

Was this resolved?  I'm getting excellent b&w prints on HP Pro Satin, but I'd be interested in comparing to a quad print if in fact this paper isn't printing b&w with all 4

I haven't heard anything yet.
I'm only printing on matte media and the level of Photo Black hasn't moved much at all compared to the greys and matte black.
Seems to me it's not printing Quad Blacks on most Matte Media as advertised it would do by HP.

The quad black is only available for the matte papers as it uses MK, PK, MG, LG and you do not want a matte black on gloss paper. I guess that it is also a wise decision by HP not to use PK on matte papers when the coating isn't optimal, the partioning with the PK included can only get some enhancement in the shadows, the density of the PK is much closer to that of the MK than to the MG ink. At least that has been my experience when I used a similar arrangement on my Epson 9000 with QTR and a MIS quad set.

I get 1.73-1.74 Dmax on HM PhotoRag (Bright White). Media profile chosen is Thick Fine Art paper>250 gsm and calibrated. On top of that I use a by the Quadtone Rip profiler created QTR RGB B&W profile. Printing from Qimage + the Advanced B&W mode of the HP driver. That is higher on HM PR than I could get with my Epson 9000 and 10000 loaded with MIS Eboni black, the last is considered a very good matte pigment ink on HM coatings.

While the Litho realistic media profile gives a wider color gamut on HM PR it is less in Dmax.

A RIP may be able to get near 1.8 Dmax but usually that will be the max possible, the more recent barite like generation (more satin) being the exception.
