HP's Vyomesh Joshi PMA keynote re: DreamColor

for those (like me) unable to be there in person this year...

Lots of focus on the home user (printing 4x6's calendards and photo books) then on easy, accurate, consistent color mangement for still or moving images (mirroring Adobe's PS for movies?), regardless of the manufacturer.

They're going to start with "toughest" problem first - moving images - tied into DreamWorks. Lots of marketing talk and a clip of Shrek 3 that wasn't tied into anything specific about the technology (ie, didn't show a print matching a movie frame from the Z3100, etc.)

FWIW, Vyomesh referenced the Z3300, but probably meant Z3100.

He kept talking about DreamColor as a standard, but didn't tie into what they're doing to make it a standard beyond HP. Also, was very vague what DreamColor really is.

Consumer-focused, 4x6 sales declining, but photobook/calendards growing fast. Wants to be sure that kids on Facebook and mySpace are printing. If they print, HP will be able to grow revenues and profits.

Says they can create the market if can tell the story. ??? What about delivering tools to professional photographers, that work ???

Must make sure that they use the Internet plus off/online ability are connected. Snapfish from 10M to 35M customers. Engine for big retailers, "all" using snapfish. The online "phenomenon" (!) is really important.

The industry needs a leader to help make the transition - help online, backoffice, digital printing, build the IT infrastructure so transition from analog to digital, telling the digital story, can be done profitability.

Focused on instore kiosks, touch screen creation of posters, etc.

(much talk really addresses "retailers" - I guess it is PMA after all)
