New Mac Mini M6 + Epson 3880
« on: October 22, 2026, 01:43:06 pm »

I have the new Mac mini M6 and connected my Epson 3880. I get a connection, but as soon as I send data to print, I get a communication error and the printer goes offline. I've checked the driver (it's current), the cables and connectors - all working - double checked on my old Mac mini M1. I'm on macOS 26.0.1. I've been working with ChatGPT but all avenues fail. I even tried printing through to the M1 as a server, but the same thing happens - as soon as data is received, it goes offline. It seems that MacOS 27 no longer supports Rosetta which is what the epson driver runs on. ChatGPT says that a native Apple Silicon driver package based on Gutenprint 5.3.5 may work but lacks Epson specific ink-level reporting.

Has anyone tried this? Or should I just send the file from my M6 to the M1 and print from there as usual. I wanted to use the M1 for other purposes, but seems that I'm going to need it as a dedicated print maker.

any suggestions?

AFAIK macOS 27 still supports Rosetta but you need to reinstall it if you upgraded, using Terminal ie `softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license`. macOS 28 will definitely remove Rosetta. I expect Epson may drop support here by not upgrading to Apple Silicon for older printers so having a Windows 10/11 or earlier version of macOS is recommended to keep it running.

macOS supports Rosetta; it's the last to do so.

Not a 3880 any longer, but testing PrintFactory on my P900, works, a tad frustrating in spots (nothing new with RIPs) but makes a damn good profile.
