The New PEN Is Sold Out. Here's Why Everyone Wants One.

The demand for the new OM SYSTEM PEN raises an interesting question: are photographers looking for smaller cameras they can carry every day? Its combination of size and features certainly makes it worth a closer look. More on the PEN here: https://luminous-landscape.com/the-new-pen-is-sold-out-heres-why-everyone-wants-one/

Well, unless one intends to print a lot, then a newish iPhone model may be just as useful - and certainly more pocketable.

The Fjorden Grip seems to be an attractive aid for the cellphones, but then again, your pockets have to be that little bit more elasticated - in both senses.

I suspect that normal camera sales are inevitably going to be hit even harder very soon. The magical fifteen hundred whatevers barrier is becoming but a memory insofar as entry level, under full-frame cameras go.

Will people continue to be happy to spend ever more on bodies and long lenses? If photography is in one's life as part of a greater interest - say birding, for example - then I can understand the drive to spend more as better tools arrive to aid your main interest. Those only interested in photography have little additional cause to push their arm towards their credit card. As many savants ask us, can you really cross your heart and declare that you have outgrown your camera's capabilities? Probably not.

Funny how often recent camera introductions have been accompanied with the "sold out" mantra; it strikes me that a more likely explanation is that manufacturers no longer have the confidence to build a lot of stock, but prefer to play the only-to-order game instead. Who can blame them, in this age of instant obsolescence?
