Is Epson SC-P7300/P9300 my next printer?

I have had a serious look at Epson 12 color printers SC-7500/SA-9500 to replace my old HP Z3200, however given the track record of both the printer and Epson´s service of them, I am not tempted.

Lately Epson has introduced a new 10 color printer SC-7300/SC9300. However, as I understand Keith Cooper, these are based on the same chassis and same print head as the 7500/9500.This makes me wonder if any unresolved issues are carried along to the two new printers? Or, have there been important design changes in the hardware?

There are many reports on paper handling issues and head strike problems with the 12 ink printers. Mark Segal in his review of the 7370/7300 writes that “Epson has considerably improved the hardware for loading rolls into the printer”, but it is unclear to me if this an improvement over the the 12 ink printers or only relative to other printers.

Some comments seem to suggest there ar more problems with the 44 inch than the 24 inch version?

I do low volume printing. I talked with a dealer today, and they claim it is fine with low volume printing at 2-3 prints a month.  They also claim it works fine in a Windows 7 environment.

I would love to hear form anyone who has any thoughts on or experience with these printers!

The main reason I asked about the Epson is because both series are quite argessively priced right now (the 10 ink only over this weekend). I save about 1/3 the price by choosing Epson over Canon 44 inch, and about 1/4 the price for the 24 inch.

Anyway, I eventually got a talk with an Epson representative, and he confirmed that 12 and 10 ink printers are identical save for the number of inks. He also suggested the 12 ink version for my work. That rules out the 10 ink for me. This gives me more time to research what to choose. The mixed reports on these Epson printers is confusing. Some seem quite happy, while others not so much.

Another feature I was not aware of is the reduced print density resulting in somwhat less detailed prints compared to previous models. I love the detail I get with the HP Z3200, so I will have to check more closely into this issue. Perhaps Canon as you suggest?
