Wordpress for a photo portfolio
« on: January 13, 2026, 10:54:01 am »

I have been designing and maintaining my portfolio at www.peteraitken.com using Lightroom's web galleries and the Dreamweaver web design program. I am pondering moving to Wordpress as a platform. I have gained some Wordpress ability as part of another project, and it would save me the $20/month that I pay Adobe for Dreamweaver. Anyone here have experience using WP for their portfolio? Comments plus or minus?

Links to WP-hosted sites are welcome.

Thanks,

Peter

Was it Wordpress that gave The Online Photographer site so much grief?

Free WP hosting here:

I've not used this free service.

A short list of web hosting companies that charge for services and add-ons (e.g., email, storefront):

WP has thousands of themes, some developed by WP, some developed by independent coders.

I you like dealing with back-end controls for a website, learning how the systems work, tweaking code to get things just right, you might enjoy having a WP site.

I paid Bluehost to host my WP website from the late 1990s until 2020. In the beginning, WP was simple, straightforward and sprite, and Bluehost was solid with great customer service. Yet around 2010, Bluehost was bought by Endurance International Group and they began adding paid features that I didn't need. Around 2020 EIG was bought by Clearlake-something. By then, managing a WP required more under the hood work that I wanted to deal with. (I've since moved on to Squarespace.)

I had a very active wordpress blog that got hacked. It was so infuriating.  I paid for security software that the hackers had easily overcome. I finally gave up trying to fight them and deleted it. I also had a website on wordpress software that was also hacked, but it was the blog that was the more devastating blow as we had months of reportage on an environmental issue here that was lost.
