Solstice sunset icescape
« on: December 22, 2025, 01:14:06 pm »

It's been a warm and dry fall and the usual amount of snow has not yet materialized. Skiing is pretty bad and I have not been doing much of it but the nights have been cold enough to make some pretty nice ice out on the lake. So in the spirit of making lemonade I've been enjoying wild ice skating and it's been a great season so far. I put in 44 miles over the weekend and the ice is still growing.
This broken section is what is known as a pressure crack. It is basically plate tectonics with ice slabs that get pushed around by currents and the wind that buckle and crack under the pressure. They can be treacherous to skaters but this one does make a nice foreground!
Happy Solstice!

Much !
Very well done, as always.
What is the thickness ? Those pressure slabs look about 4 inches ?

Thanks!
Probably more like 3 which is enough. We skate with safety gear too in case someone goes for a swim.

Fantastic, the broken ice looks like stained glass.

Thanks! I love when the ice buckles and I can use it to transmit light either through reflection or refraction.
It's a fun visual problem to work out.
