The color tool thread.
« on: November 28, 2025, 04:16:26 pm »

Hi-

I've been away for a long time, and I got my old spectros and dongles out of storage, and am having a look around at the current state of the art in color tools. So I'm starting a thread in the hope that the young will educate the elder :)

I'm also noticing some golden oldies which somehow never made an impression on me before.

- Among the antique stuff, I found the profile editor hidden in Monaco Xrite
- Norman Koren's GamutVision software which is interesting for its tutorial notes - first time I saw black point compensation explained clearly.

I hope some of you will tell me about the best of the latest.

Chromix ColorThink 4 is a great place to start, as is BabelColor’s PatchTool 7 and CT&A. Both of the BabelColor applications are currently free as the manufacturer has decided to stop producing and updating these softwares. They are both incredibly useful applications and ColorThink has some of the best colour space display capabilities and the recently released ColorThink 4 is a fabulous application.

Myiro seems to have folded.
BabelColor and PatchTool are not really maintained any more
i1Profiler seems to be losing support for older instruments.

The color stuff seems to be aging at a quick rate indeed!
I always had a Mac, and now I find that a Windows VM is essential to run old software, and also print profiling targets. Apple has gone through too many software changes.

I wonder how long I'll be able to resist moving to PC altogether.
