Hello and happy fall everyone.

I've been working with a colleague on a custom profile for Epson Premium Luster paper on a P800. The stock Epson profile prints well overall, but has a cooler white point that's emphasized by the optical brighteners in the paper.

We're hoping to create a profile that requires fewer adjustments when soft-proofing and yields a warmer print that better matches the display. We calibrate displays to 100cd, 5750k, and 250 to 1 contrast ratio. Viewing lights are GTI D50 Wall Luminaires.

Profiled the paper using 3,000 patches with an i1Pro 3 Plus, using the OBA compensation features in the i1 Profiler software. The custom profile does print warmer as intended, but I'm seeing two issues: Slight banding in test prints, and in ColorThink, the gamut surface shows irregularities (bumpy texture rather than smooth transitions) particularly in the lighter tones. I remember this post from a while back, will try adjusting the patch count too.

I know profiling is both technical and artistic. Beyond the foundational books I'm familiar with (Rodney, Schewe, Fraser/Murphy), what resources would you recommend for troubleshooting and refining custom profiles for inkjet printing? Any thoughts on what might be causing these specific issues?

Hi Sean, yeah Fall is okay but I'd rather Summer stuck around longer  :P

By coincidence I've just starting trying this paper (on my HPs) for daily use stuff.

I can only offer my random non-pro thoughts... I feel there are 2 main topics here -- the printer profile itself, and the workflow -- and the latter is probably more important.

Printer Profile

I looked at it in GamutVision (screenshot attached), and wow yeah it's indeed a lumpy puppy lol :o For comparison I've also attached my gamut on the same paper on a HP Z3200PS made with a 1728-patch target and processed in Argyll (and tbh the default 464-patch target is nearly the same). Obviously much less lumpy.

Despite best efforts to linearize printers there can always be some non-linearity in the gamut mapping. And that in itself can be okay because the colour mapping can handle it. But this is the lumpiest I've seen in my limited experience, so I have some speculative ideas.

First you might re-check the printer calibration prior to any profiling attempt to make sure it's in a good state for profiling, plus check that none of the colour channels are having any ink delivery issues.

Next, 3000 patches is a big target. (I can't imagine scanning that sucker by hand wow. I use legacy HP Z-series printers that automate patch scanning.) One of the advantages of a larger patch count is that it can better fit to non-linearities, which can be used to squeeze a bit more nuance out of a printer/ink/paper combo. So gamuts can become a bit more lumpy as the localized fit around those non-linearities gets tighter (think like a vacuum-seal shrink wrap on an irregular object vs just a plastic bag around it). That said, this still appears extra lumpy to me.

So next thought, how long did the target dry before scanning? Because one theory that pops to mind is that the print was still drying during scanning, and this particular printer/ink/paper/humidity combo may be one that has significant gamut "contraction" during drying. So I think a combination of a long-ish scan time and likely jumping around the gamut volume due to the arrangement of patch targets while the colours are still drying could in theory produce a lot of localized lumps.

Now that the target has had more drying time, if you repeated the scan I wonder if the lumpiness is significantly reduced.

Edit: Another silly Q, if the target was on multiple sheets, is it possible they got scanned in the wrong order?  :o

If none of that explained the lumpiness then maybe it's something with the scanning hardware + software process. You could take your scan data into a different profiling software to see if you get significantly different results (Argyll etc).

Once the lumpy mystery is sorted out, you can contemplate whether a 3000-patch target is worth all the effort, on what is arguably a "budget" non-archival non-matte paper on a small CMYK printer. I think many would suggest there's negligible benefit here for the cost.

Workflow

On the colour management workflow side, this caught my attention:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but it seems kinda reversed to me. The printer is going to produce what it's going to produce. The soft-proof is just a simulation to try to predict that (under specified viewing conditions), but obviously far from perfect. If one's preference is to produce warmer prints that match better with what's on the screen, that's a creative decision and I feel printer profiling isn't the tool for that. The printer profile describes the printer/ink/paper's capabilities so colours can be mapped to it in the best way. If we want to change what a print looks like, then we make pre-print adjustments to the image itself.

You mention setting screens around 5750K. I use D65 since I've read that D65 screen + D50 print tends to make proofing life easier (and it has been for me). Running "warmer" could make the prints seem cooler than you'd like. So you could try something like D65 instead to narrow the gap during soft-proofing. And/or you could apply pre-print adjustments to shift colours warmer, but note the paper white is still gonna be what it is, you can't change that.

In either case, I feel that somehow changing a printer profile to get different results is not the way. Profile the printer to characterize it, nothing more. Likewise for the screen. Maybe try D65 screen to make life easier for proofing. Then print, evaluate, and try pre-print adjustments to get the print you'd like (can vary from image to image...).

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such detailed insights. Your "wall of text" was really helpful, and lots of great angles to investigate.

The printer's in good health, targets dried overnight before scanning, and 4 sheets in the right order (though double-checking the scan data is a smart idea I hadn't considered!). The vacuum-seal vs. plastic bag analogy for patch density makes perfect sense.

We're happy with the canned Epson profile overall, but it tends toward a cooler rendering (likely emphasized by the OBAs in this paper). Since we had good success creating custom profiles for some OBA-free Canson papers, we wanted to explore whether using the OBA compensation features could help us build a profile that better predicts the cyanish cooling we're seeing in the print.

The D65 suggestion is a good idea to explore. 5750K has worked well for nearly everything except this Luster paper, so might be worth testing for this specific workflow.

This whole exercise has been wonderfully educational, even with the challenging results. Conversations like these really help connect the small details that make a real difference. Thanks again for being so generous with your time and expertise, I'll post an update if we make progress!

I think the inherent limitations of soft-proofing are always going to leave a "gap". I find my portrait prints often appear slightly more yellow than my soft-proof (to my eyes, under my lighting), but I found that a simple hue adjustment layer nudges the reds back into the skin tones before printing and then it's an effective match. I'm not familiar with the OBA Comp of i1 but get the general idea of its intent. I think I prefer the flexibility of that manual adjustment to "tune it" if needed rather than relying on a canned algo feature in the profiling software.

Back to the blob... wow that's still a really bizarre shape  :o Although I have some profiles with minor lumpiness they're nothing like that. I also notice the "craters" are only along the luminosity axis L (vertical direction). That suggests to me this couldn't be due to drying like I speculated earlier (which "contracts" in all directions), so def forget that. It's gotta be something systemic in the process causing this.

In my mind there's 3 steps: target data > measurement data > profile. If you're able to view the target and measurement data I think you'll see where in the process it's getting borked:
- If the lumps are in the target data, then that's the problem, it's a "bad" target to begin with.
- If the lumps are only in the measurement data, then it's a measurement problem with the scanner/software. And hardware seems unlikely here because you'd be getting it all the time, so maybe software.
- If the lumps are only in the resulting profile, then it's a profile creation software problem.

I tried to view the measurement and target data in your profile file (if embedded) but I can't because it's a v4 ICC and Argyll can't process v4 files (only up to v3.4). Maybe someone here can suggest how you can check your target and measurement data in i1, or if it's embedded in your ICC file. Or even better might recognize that weird lumpy flame shape and know exactly what's causing it.

Maybe just my confused memory, but wasn't there an issue with V4 profiling and OBAs ?  Going back to V2 solved it ?

Some software (still) doesn't play nice with V4 profiles. And they don't do anything useful, so just build V2S.

Hi Sean, Kyle

With a bumpy profile like that, I would suspect the print and therefore probably the printer before anything else especially because of the posting by Kyle. Although some really weird OBA issue ...

I built a profile editor suite once when I was doing camera profiles; I described it once at an ICC meeting and the gentleman from Kodak got very angry with me :) I'm astonished no one has such a product out by now, as I would expect patents have expired .
