18 yr old printheads still going... (HP Z3100)
« on: August 30, 2025, 10:57:11 am »

Was semi-shocked this week when I realized all the heads in my Z3100PS (except MK-R) are *18* years old  :o Dated 2007!

Ofc it's had very little real use -- the volume of test/diag/exercise plots probably outnumbers real prints by 10 to 1 lol -- but still it's kinda wild.

I purged/reprimed all of these heads last year and they're still holding well at 58~59 grams. The printer sat unused since then (rotten life), so this week I revived it with numerous headclean cycles and diag/exercise plots. Also cleaned up the gunk on the service station (both with and without capping station retracted) and the heads/carriage. Also soaked the nozzles of the PK-LG head again since it's getting a little tired.

PSA: my old notes reminded me about the IQSB Plot in the hidden service menu, which I find is much more useful than the regular Diag Plot. Much larger colour patches are easier to evaluate and kind of a mini exercise plot. And 2 ink densities, basically "full" and "half". Plus some alignment-related info. It doesn't test GE, but that's been kinda useless on the regular diag plot anyhow.

Yea, that is really amazing. I have a friend who has a Z3100 who also used it lightly. He has had it for about 17 years. He called me in a panic one day saying two of his nozzles didn’t print even after several cleanings. I asked him how old the heads were. He said oh, they were the ones that came with the printer. Of course it was fine when he bought a couple of heads :-).

When you say you purged and reprimed your heads, what is the procedure for that? Would we be able to save  an old 70 red head on the z3100?  I tried soaking heads in a solution of 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 isopropyl alcohol about 3 times and that made no difference for me. ( I also tried 100% alcohol. )I soaked them about 24 hours making sure not to wet the chip on them.

If he meant 2 colours were not printing at all, then it's highly likely those heads are full of air. And probably almost guaranteed given that age. Easily checked by weighing, 60 grams is full. Those heads could easily be re-primed with ink to remove the air and still used, assuming they aren't otherwise fried. Checking for any error/status codes thru the HP Utility / Web Interface or the printer's panel menu would confirm if they have a fatal error (tho if they do, the printer should have already been prompting to replace the head). Any air in the printer ink tubes should also be purged.

If your MK-R head is full of air (ink is empty) you can't get blood from a stone no matter how much you soak the nozzles. (Ok you may get *something* but it won't be working properly or consistently.) Check the weight, 60 g is full, mid-40's is empty both sides. Much more than a few grams below 60 g should really be re-primed.

Priming is mentioned in several other threads, here are some useful ones, some with pics, and some with links to purge kits and videos to use them:

The link for the LPS kit shows they also include a "cleaning fluid" to draw thru the head. I've been reluctant to try that, tho I saw somebody on here mention they have. It might be an option tho if the printhead has too many clogged nozzles, might help clear some of them if soaking could not.

Note the service manual says alcohol should not be used on the printhead nozzles (tho I can't recall if I've done it myself anyway as last resort). My recent "soak" was just on a wet paper towel. Some more info about nozzle cleaning here: http://z3200.com/Cleaning_HP-Z3200_Print_Heads_Manually.htm

Kyle, thanks a lot for those valuable links to priming! I’ve never tried it all these years and the soaking never worked for me.

The Chinese remanufactured head I bought on eBay looked exactly like the original except for the original paper sticker label is gone. Used it with the Z inks. I guess they just clean and prime the Hp heads and fill with some less expensive ink.
