Spectraview App "Off-Centre"
« on: March 17, 2025, 10:44:32 am »

I don't seem to be able to find an answer to fixing this irritation...!

When I open SpectraviewII to calibrate my display, it opens off to the top left hand side of the screen (see attached image).

Nothing happens when I place the cursor on the bottom right-hand corner so I can't drag it at all.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks!

Hi, not sure what you mean... It looks fine like it's full screen, and I don't see any window off the top left.

Not only does it look fine, it really doesn't matter much.

try going to the "window" menu and select "zoom"

Thanks for that idea....but, it does't give that option...(See attachment) That is what it looks like before I go into "Calibrate Mode"

Kyle and Andrew, thanks, I know it's not a matter of life and death - as I said, "an irritation". :)

I took a more accurate screenshot of what it looks like...(see attachment) in "Calibrate Mode"

oh i see, you had the finder focused on the first screenshot so i could see the window menu.  Either way, it's a mac issue in general, not a problem with that specific program, so google around for "mac window stuck partly off screen" and you'll find some answers.  I had to deal with this ages ago for something but I can't remember what the solution was at the time-- it happens with some regularity if you plug and unplug external displays.  Here's a thread on it:  https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/71112/how-do-i-move-a-window-whose-title-bar-is-off-screen

all the solutions are a bit painful-- you might have an easier time trashing the preferences for the app or even uninstalling and reinstalling.  If you use something like Appcleaner you can drag the program to it, and it will gather all the external files that the program has spread around the system, then you can just trash the prefs file (usually a .plist or something).  Also some apps will reset their prefs if you hold option while opening them.

Ok sounds like you got it sorted out. I still don't see/understand what you're trying to show in your screenshots. Maybe it's a Mac thing I dunno.

Anyhow I have SpectraView II if you have any questions about it. I don't use it anymore now because my old NEC is in bad shape (failing CCFL backlight), but the software is still installed on my PC.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone who responded, nothing seems to work, including downloading the latest version - which I battled to do for a few days but has now just worked!

As I said in the beginning, it is an irritation that I will have to live with! >:(

Thanks again,
William.

Lol maybe "it" is fixable, but can't help since still don't know what "it" is 🤷‍♂️

FWIW here's a screenshot of SpectraView II 1.1.41 launched on my Win 10 PC, and another screenshot when I click the Calibrate button (after dug the spectro outta the trash lol).

These are normal, and the second one looks very similar to your original screenshot (altho yours appears to be a different version and/or device), which is why I originally said your screenshot looks fine to me. I dunno what "top left window" you mean is missing.

if you look closely at his first screenshot you can see a strip of the desktop peeking through at the right and bottom of the screen because the app window is not centered, but pushed up and to the left, thus hiding the menu bar off-screen so he can't move it around or full-screen the window.  installing something like magnet or rectangle would allow keyboard shortcuts to snap it to center or any other placement as well.

Come on, guys, it doesn't matter! Put the instrument within the more prominent (initially white) area indicated and calibrate/profile.

of course this particular variation on this issue doesn't affect calibration.  But I've had this happen where windows are waaaayyy off the screen, to the point where, if it were in this app, you'd be calibrating at the top left corner of your screen, which then wouldn't be ideal.  I don't see a good reason NOT to discuss a solution to the problem, even if there's a usable workaround...

And why not? You think the purity of the display, by design differs that much? The dead center is somehow 'ideal'?

I almost wrote a long thing about "yes of course considering the uniformity of whatever monitor OP is using... blah blah" but who gives a sh*t?  The guy was having an OS issue with a window being annoyingly off the screen, and I was trying to help him out with that part.  Sue me.

What you wrote was an assumption without data ("if it were in this app, you'd be calibrating at the top left corner of your screen, which then wouldn't be ideal.")
Now for the data! Here's the dE between 9 measurement values taken dead center and in the upper left-hand corner of my PA. It's invisible!
You were unable to answer my question, but I could do so with measurement data.
I'm sorry the colorimetric data may ruin your day.

Andrew, that was the only thing worrying me....light seepage - so thanks for clearing that up me. I will also create a black screen for that app!

Ah! Ok I see what they meant now. Strange because mine has only ever been fullscreen, no evidence of it being a window. All I can click is Continue or Cancel like my screenshot shows. That's what confused the crap outta me here! So maybe this is a Mac thing, or a newer SpectraView version thing 🤷‍♂️

In Windows land smacking F11 might be useful, depending on whether it's running windowed, borderless, or full screen. There's some other hotkeys I forget too... But useless info on Mac I guess.

Andrew, I really don't get it man, why do you want to "ruin my day with colorimetric data?"  I even acknowledged earlier that the issue was not one of calibration, but a simple annoyance of the OS.  You made an assumption that what I meant by "measuring in the upper left hand corner, which wouldn't be ideal" meant that I thought the upper left corner of my display would be less accurate by design.  What I actually meant was that I wouldn't want to be forced into measuring any specific part of the screen because of some stupid OS display issue.  I'd rather choose where I can measure.  Also, many monitors that are not like your PA do deviate in a significant amount from the middle to the edges.  Even by Eizo's own admissions, without their DUE compensation, there can be not-insignificant deviations.  Your monitor also has uniformity compensation.  I don't know what OP is using.  Also here's another good example-- I have an (older) professional sony mastering monitor that has a backlight issue at one of the edges.  It's so far over that it's easily ignorable.  However, if I were forced to calibrate THAT area, it would screw up the rest of my monitor to the point of being unusable.  By your logic I should throw it out and spend $30,000 on a new one?

I completely agree with your assessment of the situation that is relavent to this posting-- that this slight movement of the measurement area is insignificant.  But I don't see why you would venture to stop the discussion of the OS display issue, which IS AN ACTUAL ISSUE, even if it's a minor one with no bearing on the calibration of that display.  I realize you literally wrote the book(s) on this stuff, and I've even led other members your way when they've asked for outside printer profiling help.  I just don't understand the attack here.  By saying "it would be less than ideal" to measure the top left corner of MY monitor, I'm not exactly spreading harmful disinformation.  And proving that YOUR monitor is very uniform edge-to-edge is also not a particularily useful guide for anybody not possessing a monitor of such quality.  All monitors with built in calibration devices measure at the edges of their displays.  But these are also expensive monitors, and they're not the only thing out there that can get a job done.  Bigger displays can have worse uniformity issues depending on technology-- is it not worth calibrating those displays?  I wouldn't say so, but I'd like to choose the point at which I can measure.  Sometimes it's even a matter of actual physical space-- If I'm doing a simultaneous measure for a colorimeter correction with a spectro, there might literally not be enough room to have both devices at the corner of the screen at the same time.  Sure there are ways around that too.  As for SpectraView, I don't believe you have the option to choose where you can place the measurement window, so in this instance it truely absolutely does not matter for the point of calibration of this display, but there is a "not never" situation in which you might want to change the position of the measurement window, and for most of my monitors, i'd like to use the center (not DEAD, idc if it's off by a few millimeters or even inches in any direction) because that's the place my eyes rest the majority of the time.

If you really wanted to have this discussion it would make sense to start a different topic about it, I still don't understand the vitriol for continuing to help solve a window issue that doesn't relate to color management even though it was posted in the color management section of the forum.

Here are some attachments about across monitor uniformity, one is from a test of an eizo flexscan (the one in color) which does not have any kind of uniformity compensation, the other is from Eizo's website discussing their compensation, with no key for what the different shading values mean in any numerical sense.  Not my data, but I've looked at a lot of uniformity graphs in my day, and for monitors that don't have compensation they often have enough variance across the panel that differences are noticable.

Just anecdotally, I used to use the NEC PAxxxxQ monitor that you have, Andrew, daily, and when you displayed a black and white image on it full screen, there were noticeable shifts from left to right in green/red.  Maybe you won the panel lottery, maybe the shifts I noticed wouldn't be measurable.  The red on that display is PFS phosphor, a very spiky narrow wavelength, and wreaked havoc with the perceived neutrality in my eyes.  Since spectraview doesn't allow colorimeter corrections, I had to switch to using displaycal and calibrating throught he graphics card instead of the hardware calibration in order for it not to drive me crazy with a pinkish cast when calibrated to D65.
