The Raw looks like nothing, it's dark as night, the Aurora is barely visible, it's an absolute marvel of technology and time in photography where we can push our tools to the limit and pick up shots/scenes like this. What's amazing (and doesn't snow well in the JPG is that the camera is picking up the purple and reds at the fringes of the green. I should probably make a processing video based on that photo, it's a very hard shot to work with. It looks like almost nothing in the actual shot. I've attached a small version of the Raw (put into JPG) with just a +3.0 exposure adjustment to get a feel for it (I had to go to +4.0 exposure adjustment for the one above). There is so much light between the moonlight and the twilight time, that it's drowning out what would have been an epic solar storm at the dark of night. But I think it also creates a unique scene. It was shot at ISO 100, F4, and for about 8 seconds to keep the sky and solar storm from blowing out, and noise down. And somehow, even though I'm on Medium format, the foreground doesn't look too soft. I'm rather dissapointed with myself however, for not taking the time to shoot one four minute exposure at F8 for the foreground. It would have enhanced the printability.
Great set. The aurora is always the icing on the cake.
