Trying to work out a color management bug on new Canon 4600

Glad to hear you're having success with PPL. For Canon, ImagePrint Black/Red doesn't buy you anything over PPL in terms of print quality as IP still leverages the Canon driver. Same with QImage. They make the workflow better and ImagePrint Black comes with a profiling service, but I know you'd rather make your own profiles anyhow.

I've heard there are other RIPs that might more directly control the printer, but I haven't used any. So I wouldn't jump on a RIP right now if Canon PPL is working for you.

Well I finally have acceptable results, 2 rolls of canvas later.
Printed through Canon professional print and layout. The 2033 patch profile I made is perfect.
There was nothing wrong with it all along except the Apple/Adobe glitch or whatever we call it.
I used the canon media guide to setup the .am1x media file and every thing looks fantastic except the black and white image on the test file.
I printed one of the files using Canons Black and White file and it was no better.
The only black and white test file that looks really good is when selecting Printer manages color so I am taking good notes. It was suggested that I use a rip but everything at least for now is more than acceptable.
Getting older, more stubborn and pretty set in my Epson printing ways or I may have flushed this out earlier. Thank you all for your input.

I wish we could find a way of forcefully impressing on Apple the urgent need to fix this problem.  I did send a letter by airmail to Tim Cooke but sadly never received even an acknowledgement.

HI Dan, I am pleased to hear that you are happier(?) now!

This thread got me checking various things and I have spent quite a bit of time making test using various methods...I even downloaded Mirage on the 14-say trial and have persisted with trying to learn the Canon Professional Print and Layout.(CPPL)
It turns out that the way I have been printing through Lightroom and Photoshop produces the exact same test prints as the other two methods.

However, what I have discovered through all this is: (see illustration) - the resolution is (in CPPL) 240dpi and the colourspace is Adobe 1998 Update: ...from Lightroom.

I was "taught" by the Jeff Schewe and Michael Reichmann videos that Canon is 300 or 600dpi and Epson 360 or 720dpi...why is Canon converting that to 240dpi and also converting the colourspace?
Lightroom must be where the problem is...

Am I missing some place to set these things?

UPDATE: When I send the same image through Photoshop it does not change anything!!??

I am jumping back and forth between 3 printers. Epson P8000 and P5370 and the Canon P4600.
With the Epson's and printing through Lightroom the prints are spot on.
It was when printing with the Canon I could not get acceptable prints with Lightroom but when switching to the Canon and printing with Canon Print Layout they came out perfect.
Something about the Canon that just  does not play well with Adobe/Apple. That we all pretty much know.

After more testing, using Bill Atkinson's Balls, I have decided that, from now on I will go from Lightroom to Photoshop where I will size and prepare the image. From there I will go to Canon Professional Print & Layout and make the print from there!
