Finding out which images are changed externally
« on: December 26, 2024, 02:45:33 pm »

I am just returning to lightroom and photography after several years away.
Cleaning up my LR classic 14.1.1 folders is something I have just done.
I am now wanting to make sure I have written all LR metadata to my dngs. When I select all and go to save metadata, a box pops up saying one or more images metadata was changed in an external progeam, overwrite? I say no.
However, is there a way to search my approximately 60,000 images to find out which ones were changed? I don't want to manually trawl all of the folders to do this.
Is there a plug in for this?

You probably want to say yes. Let LR write what it 'thinks' are the changes to the DNG. Now after, if you still get this notification, you need to see if any other external app or system/OS is touching the data to provide this disconnect between the two.

It seems wrong to overwrite without knowing the changed files though. I have a few backups to use if necessary so I shall do that.

It depends on where the change came from and how it affects the LR's understanding of all your edits! This is a parametric editor. It doesn't alter your image data source; it creates instructions. It happens in DNG, to place that into the container without affecting the image data. But that is the way edits are applied for future rendering. What outside LR is affecting this? What happens if LR or Adobe Camera Raw can't access the original instructions you made in either product?
