Large external drive for Mac Mini system & Lightroom
« on: November 08, 2024, 12:53:54 pm »

New to Apple computers, switching over from PC with the new Mini M4 Pro computer.
Looking for a solution for an external drive, 12TB or more, that has the speed for working in Lightroom. My budget is not limitless, I see SSD raid solutions, out of my budget.
The Lacie 1 Big Dock looks like it has potential, Thunderbolt 3 connection. Any other suggestions? One thought is get a Lacie Big Dock for storage, and a fast 4 TB SSD as a working drive.

I went from my 2009 maxxed-out MacPro to a MacStudio a year ago. Had a couple of SSDs under the hood and several JBOD boxes hooked up to it. I wanted to modernize and de-clutter the MacStudio.

My solution was a to start with 2TB under the hood so that I had plenty of room to work near-term projects without running out of space. I added a 4TB Samsung T7 for nearby storage then a 2.5 inch 5TB Segate for my TimeMachine backup.

But that only solved my current projects.

For my archives, I bought an OWC 4-bay enclosure that I think is Thunderbolt or at least some kind of faster USB-C. I added a couple of large drives (14 TB & 16 TB, I think), plus a smaller drive that i mirror my last two years files that gets stashed away when I'm absent. I have another 8TB drive with older work back to the 1990s that I fire-up when I need to dig deeply, otherwise, it's usually off.

On the two large drives are my archives back a decade. For most of my files, I now have 3-4 copies, mostly placed in another building so it's not perfect but it's better than most.

My approach dates back to way before Lightroom and works for me. Key is using Photo Mechanic which dove-tails into the Spotlight search engine, part of the Mac OS.

I think you approach using a larger SSD plus a JBOD (which also allows RAID, both striped and mirroring) may be an affordable soltuion to your new system. The larger drives I have are fairly affordable, very reliable and probably bigger capacity than when I started building my new system.

Though I'd love to have all SSD storage, it's too expensive and overall can be less reliable than HDD storage, but my system works fine for me.

Thanks, the Lacie 18 TB and a 4 TB SSD seems the best solution so far within my budget. I'll backup to 12 TB USB 3 drives.

OWC is a good name to know.

I wouldn't pay the Lacie tax, personally.  I'd do a TB4 NVMe external as the 'active' space, and a external of size for the 'archive' space.  I'm not a huge fan of SoftRAID, but it is an option.

The Mac Mini M4 is such a small machine, doing a MiniStack under it is an option.  Another is the QNAP TR-004

How many of the 12tb's do you have?  I might consider doing newer/larger backup drives, and shuck/reuse the 12's in the QNAP

Thanks, I'll look at the OWC, for the price of the Lacie I may be able to get both HD and SSD.

I have been using the Lacie 1 Big Dock 10TB with Thunderbolt for over a year now. I bought it straight from Apple shop cheaper than elsewhere. All data is on it and I have a 10TB and 12TB USB drives that I use for TimeMachine hourly backups that rotate every couple of weeks. It is also handy as it has an external monitor port and front ports for cards.

Hi Bob, That is the setup I have been considering. Do you find the Big Dock fast enough when working with large RAW files in lightroom? Some review say the drive is quite loud, have you found that?

Just a word of caution. I have been looking for TB4 SSD but it seems they can actually be 3.2 gen 2x2 and I am not sure Macs will operate them at full speed.

I seldom use Lightroom but it seems fine for Hasselblad raw files that are over 100MP. No noise issue for me. It developed a minor issue that the drive light does not shut down when the computer shuts down, but the drive stops. Does not seem to be a problem.
Good luck.

This ministack will be larger than todays Mini M4  I  guess...

Have decided to pick up a Ministack, and purchase a separate 12 TB HDD. Maybe pick up a Thunderbolt 5 drive when they become available if the Ministack proves to be too slow to work from.

OWC has recently introduced a Thunderbolt 5 portable ssd, the Envoy Ultra in 2TB and 4TB formats with up to 6000MB/s!

Upload your image files to the filestore on the OWC miniStack.  Configure Lightroom to save its catalog and associated data on the Mac Mini's internal drive.  Since the image files to be edited in Lightroom never need to be modified and rewritten, the external drive will be more than fast enough.  In fact, you could use a much slower device and never notice any performance degredation.
