Sunset at the Pallisades
« on: November 04, 2024, 05:20:26 pm »

In my usual fashion I noticed it looked like a nice sunset was coming the other day as it was about to happen. Clouds covered most of the sky and there was a gap near the western horizon. Sunset was 15 minutes away. So I headed to a spot I haven't been to in a while that would work well with color high in the sky but not if it was just close to the horizon. I had to hurry and hike a mile or so to this spot and work around the power lines that add some additional compositional challenges.
The sunset paid off and although a little rushed I got some compositions I liked. My tripod without a center column helped me get nice and low for this perspective.

I love the sky and composition. Overall, there seems more of a magenta cast that I'd have expected.

Thanks Jeremy. It was one of those challenging white balance situations where the light was very colored. I think this is relatively accurate but I should play with what might look better too.

Sometimes, as I am often reminded by critiques of ice photos I've taken in polar regions, accuracy needs to take second place to aesthetics. I've been roundly criticised for the depth and intensity of the blue colours, even after I have, to my mind, muted them substantially. Only those who've been there can attest to their being a realistic representation.

There's no (or not much, anyway) point in being true to yourself, however warm a feeling it bestows, if everyone else, however ignorant, recoils.
