Anyone printing with Quad Tone Rip (QTR) Several questions
« on: February 28, 2024, 08:23:22 am »

I have everything set up for my 3880 and P800 and am printing through Lightroom. I cannot find any place to select my media. Printer manages color is selected so I am able to choose the 3880 QTR printer.
Secondly when trying to install QTR on my Epson P8000 It will not install, see attached screen shot.

I have been using QTR & Piezography for over 10 years now so I'm not sure if I can be of any help, but here goes. Keep in mind that QTR is a print driver. The community edition for Piezography (https://community.inkjetmall.com/) will have the curves for QTR for the printers that QTR supports. I'm PC based so if you're a mac user, I can't be too helpful.
1st, have you checked with Roy Harrington to see if the P8000 is supported with QTR? If it is and you are Mac based, then from what I've been told, (I attended a Piezography workshop with Jon Cone at Cone editions Press in Vermont in "21) you should be printing through the QTR Print tool. If PC, then through the QTRgui (which is what I use for Piezography Pro on my P800). QTRgui allows me to select paper size, orientation, type (matte or glossy), the curves & blending thereof, placement & scale on the paper, resolution, etc. I would contact Jon Cone and/or Walker Blackwell to ask more pointed questions. I hope some of this was of help.

If you look at my screen shot it shows the install version for the P8000. Why it doesn't load I don't know. I purchased the Print tool this morning and have that now. Just need to get a little more familiar with where things are at.
I had considered Piezography but my 3880 is a little long in the tooth to put any more money into it. I have a new P5370 on the way and it's B&W is said to be superb. So for now it looks like QTR for the 3880 and P800 and Advanced Black and White with the P5370.

The P8000 is listed as a supported printer in the latest version of QTR, so it should work so long as you have the latest version.  The 5370 is brand new and so is not supported, yet, but given that it has the P900 head I have faith that Roy Harrington will support it sooner or later.

I'm also a PC user, so it's hard to comment, but as QTR on Mac is a printer driver then I assume that paper selection and other settings are selected in the same way as other printer drivers.  If not then Print Tool is your friend, but I think it means saving an exported image from LR, which is what Win users have to do.

There is a dedicated QTR group on groups.io where most people seem to be on Mac and Roy seems moderately active.  You're going to get most information and advice there.

This maybe an obvious question but is your printer a network connected printer?  If so,  just enter the IP address of your printer at the prompt and it should recognize it.  I had the same error message when installing and this fixed the issue.

It is a network connected unit.
Thanks, will give that a try.

It's risky for a Win user to attempt to give a Mac user advice, but did you accidentally install the P8000 using the Apple Air Print driver rather than the Epson driver?  I gather it's easy to do this if you hit the wrong option at install time.  My understanding is that if you did you will need to uninstall and reinstall with the correct driver.  There should be instructions about how to do this on the QTR group.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to communicate with Roy Harrington, QTR and Print-Tool's author. I've attached a screenshot of the QTR support page.

I've asked Roy several questions over the years I've been using QTR and he's always pleasant and responsive.

Good luck,

Eric

Nope, That one I know about as I teach this stuff. All IP drivers and have had both for over 3 years.
