Retiring NEC Multisync PA271W, replacement suggestions?
« on: February 01, 2024, 08:59:51 pm »

My 27" NEC Multisync PA271W Has over 17,600+ hours of use on it. Soft proofing used to be acceptably good- now, not so much. Calibration, once upon a time easy and pretty precise, is now problematic.  To get a decent Delta number brightness is severely limited.  My understanding is that 10K hours is about all one should expect. And I understand that NEC is no longer making the premium product they once did. I'd appreciate suggestions for a replacement, preferably with a calibration capacity.  I am a fan of most things Apple but not particularly their monitors.  I'll be driving the new monitor with a 2022 MacBook Pro.  As an old and happy Photokit Sharpener user I'd especially like a suggestion from Andrew Rodney.
Thanks in advance,

NEC EA271U has hardware calibration and uniformity compensation, so it's decent in sRGB range and not expensive

If you need wider gamut - Apple Studio Display is suprisingly good, it's as advanced as latest PA or CG series, but way sharper and with effective antireflex coating

More affordable options are recent LG Ultrafine or Dell Ultrasharp with IPS Black panels, they're also not that bad, and LG has even nice hardware calibration software

When my NEC 271 failed I replaced it with a Eizo ColorEdge CS2731.
As far as I can tell an excellent monitor at a decent price, very happy with it.

It seems that Eizo is still the optimum choice when the budget permits, with NEC and BenQ being good secondary options.

I replaced an ancient NEC with a Dell UP2718 Ultrasharp and have been 100% happy. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1613840-REG/dell_up2720q_ultrasharp_27_4k_uhd.html

I'm at 12354 on my PA, very low dE numbers thus far.

Many thanks to all who joined in on this.  After further inquiry I settled on the Eizo CS2740 with the EX4 calibration.  The Apple Studio Display was attractive- very bright, great for viewing movies and such.  But I never got a clear answer on how much of Adobe 98 RGB the Apple covers.  Eizo tech support for their monitors seems very much better than Apple's for their displays.
Again, thanks to all,
Jed

It uses a similar, but not identical wide gamut (DCI-P3), which is a tad larger than Adobe RGB (1998).
The gamut volume of DCI-P3 is 1,322,770 while Adobe RGB (1998) is 1,206,380.
Red is DCI-P3, Green is Adobe RGB (1998):

The other negative I encountered with the Apple Studio Display was calibration.  Various Apple people asserted that the internal calibration was more than adequate- nothing else needed.  One Genius at the Palo Alto Genius Bar thought that one of the X-Rite pucks could be used but wasn't clear on the optimal software.  Thanks for the note on gamut-significantly wider than what my older 24" Epson can print.

Unlikely to be the case.

My PA271W died about a week ago, couldn't power it on.  Even before that I could not get the calibration to work anymore.  And now, I am typing this message on my new EIZO CS2740!  Works great, calibrated monitor with EX4 closely matches  color and B/W test targets I downloaded from Keith Cooper's site at North Light Images. The 4k (3840 x 2160) allows for really close examination of potential print detail.  However, because text is so small at this resolution on a 27 inch monitor I am finding it useful to toggle the display resolution as needed (easy using Windows 10) and also keep my Photoshop palettes on a separate lower resolution monitor on the side.  The ColorNavigator 7 software is easy to use for calibration and creating proof targets.

ASUS ProArt Monitors are really impressive. I own and still use my EIZO CG-271 monitor for 9yrs now. However, shopping around for an updated device (4k, USB-C, HDMI-2.0, etc..) I could not ignore ASUS, the price varies a great deal depending on application and industry and what you want to use the monitor for, stay away from the Gamers monitors they are expensive, but looking at the specs and what you get in return it is quite worth it.

You can get a good bargain if you pick a model which is a year old.
