Repairing the road
« on: September 19, 2023, 05:05:36 pm »

I was trying out to make reproductions of some 35mm black and white film and came up with this.
Spain about 1985...
What i also discovered: looking back i should have used this fabulous   Kodak Technical Pan 25 asa    more often.
you can blow it up till 1.5 meter with hardly any grain, supersharp and it has a built in red filter.
( for slides i shoud have used Kodrachrome- same story. )

I just read on wikipedia that Technical pan in fact was a military produced film that got obsolete as soon they used digital images.
Kodak did not produce it ; it was a stock hold in a freezer and sold by Kodak to the public up until it was finished (2004)
Making prints in 2023 from a good scan reveals that it has medium format film (6x6) tonal qualities.
Again it shows film was de limiting factor in those days, not the lenses.
(At the moment it is again the same ; good fullframe lenses can do a lot more than 100mp in the central area of the frame- the sensor is the weakest link)

Fantastic scene... I like it a lot and it reminds how common things were made a long time ago.

So i bought this - 50 year old! - nikon bellows. second hand and tried my nikon lenses on it, backwards
it is called the nikon -PB-4... they say they have not made a better one since... it can do shift and tilt.

The photo above was a scan from my still perfectly good 85mm PCE lens.  ( a boring good lens)
Here two details made with an old 35mm f2 AF nikkor backwards ( whole image ) and
a 100% crop from the second lens of Nikon i ever bought in 1983 the 20mm f3.5.
the latter did a 12x enlargement! with the bellows at max width.
