Despite the fact that 16 bits sensors have already existed for some years, particularly in MF cameras, according to Dynamic Range measurements none of them really needed such bitcount to fully encode the DR the sensor was able to capture.
In a similar way, first 14 bit DSLR's such as the Canon 40D again didn't really need those 14 bits, when 12 bits was still enough to encode its sensor DR. It was Sony's APS in the Pentax K5 the first genuine 14 bits sensor on a DSLR.
Finally, the latest FF cameras such as the Nikon D850 and Sony A7R III have pushed dynamic range to the limits of a 14 bit encoding.
Now Sony presents a new line of 16 bit FF sensors. Let's see if there has been a real dynamic range enhancement so that those 16 bits are really needed. If so, we are getting closer to the day when multiple exposure becomes totally useless for the landscape and architecture/indoor photographer.
