Printing the date on prints from Canon XTi
« on: January 18, 2007, 05:55:45 am »

Greetings from Ireland!

Newbie here so please excuse the lack of knowledge.

Am considering going from the EOS Rebel SLR to the XTi. DSLR

Also have the Canon G2 as the P&S.

One requirement is the ability to print the date on the front of the pictures.
photo-vandalism perhaps - my trouble and strife wants to have it for all the pictures of our first grandchild!
I had the option of getting  the facility on the Rebel  for an extra 10% of cost in 1992 but due to funds did not- have heard about it ever since!

Does the XTi have that function and how is it controlled?.

I don't print my own pics, just burn them in 100's onto a cd for the print shop.
The G2 is supposed to allow you do it but to no avail thus far.

In terms of current glass for the Rebel, we have the
EF 50 mm 1:1.8 II and the
EF 28-80 1:3.5-5.6

which I gather will work on the XTi

Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks
Colm

This [stupid?] requirement can be easily satisfied after downloading the pics to your PC [from ANY digital camera] by means of inexpensive 3rd-party software easily found from a google search. E.g. search "print date on digital photograph".
Note: This way will allow you to to keep an 'untouched' original.

Since you aren't printing the photos are you sure you need the date on the front of the photo?  It will exist in the exif data.

THere's absolutely no reason to deface the image with a date/time stamp when all of that info (as well as all the shooting trivia you'll ever want to know) is in the image file (as EXIF data) already. Adobe Bridge and many other programs can display the image and the EXIF data side by side, so you can not only view the image, but see the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera serial number and manufacturer, date and time the shot was taken (down to the second), whether or not the flash fired, and many other things.

That's what I get for responding long after I read the original post.  Never mind then.

Sorry DP, I did not mean to be offensive.

For interest when the XTi is connected directly to a printer, one of the choices is to include the date or file number or both on the face of the picture.

beyond that I dont see any other solutions.

You weren't.  I should have paid more attention to the original message and clearly didn't.  (I should also have paid more attention to the layout of this keyboard before buying it.  Oh, wait, there is an inset key.  My god, the function keys are round.  wth.)

Even I was recently trying to figure out a way to print the date on the photos. I hoped there was something I could just do inside of lightroom. but there isn't anything. I got suggested to request the feature in adobeforums.com

In Lightroom check on the print module under Overlays.  There is a Photo Info check box and you can print the date or other photo info on the image.

Have you asked your print shop to print the date on the photograph.  Images directly from the camera have EXIF data which gives the date and time shot and your printer might be able to print that for you
