Epson or Canon etc.... get extended warranty?
« on: June 09, 2023, 03:14:09 pm »

Just just got the Epson P 900, but question could apply to Canon and other similars...

I usually don't buy extended warranties for anything, but thinking about the Square trade 3 years $240 about... The Epson is even more $..

But... some argue don't bother, that printers are supposed to be disposable  and if last year, odds are 99% be ok for at least 4-5 years with light/ moderate use. any opinions? thanks.

Would probably pass on that model. Yes it is a crap shoot but it is a fairly inexpensive printer and is more of a throw away than one you would send to a service center after 5 years.
Where it really comes in handy is for the big Epson's. Heads are only replaceable by a tech. My head replacement with dampers on my 9900 8 years ago cost $3100 and I did not have the extended warranty.
The printer was older that 5 years so the extended warranty was not an option. Another example where the extended warranty would have been nice. I purchased a used 64" Epson solvent s80600 last summer at auction.
"After" purchase I found out both heads were bad. Replacement of both heads to the tune of $5100 with no warranty. (This printer new is $25,000)
Again extended warranty was not available but these are numbers that really kick a small shop owner pretty hard.

Interesting question. I am a retired bum who spends most of my time these days making and printing photographs. I do not sell or market. I just have fun.

I have had a P900 for about six months. I sold my working 3880 because I wanted the ability to switch matte and glossy instantly with no ink and time waste. The P900 has worked well until about three weeks ago when it decided even slightly thick papers, like Canson Platine, would not feed properly though the rear (top) feed. I read and re-read the Epson manual as well as Mark Segal's superb 92 page review of it on PhotoPXL (highly recommended for any P900 owner). I took some paper to the local store where I purchased the printer and it seemed to feed the Platine just fine with their demo P900. My conclusion is that there's a problem with the printer.

I then called Epson Tech Support who were friendly but not very helpful. Essentially he said to use the front feed. That does work but the front feed is a slower and more tedious process, and according to the authorities should be used only for paper >0.5mm (Platine is 0.43mm). When I said that didn't seem right for a $1,000 printer that is only six months old, the response was that I could get a new printer, but... it would be a refurbished unit and he did not recommend that approach. When I shared that info with Mark Segal, he also was not in favor of the refurbished approach, no guarantee I'd not be back where I started.

Where I am now is gently pushing on the paper and it will usually feed but I'm not comfortable with that either. There is no question in my mind that the 3880 was better built than the P900. The P900 prints are quite lovely and it really is nice to be able to decide to switch paper easily but with looking back, I probably should have stuck with the 3880 and its exorbitant ink costs, or gotten a P5000, which won't switch paper surfaces so easily but whose capacious ink cartridges make it cheap enough to switch whenever I'd want.

My ongoing fantasy was to have a 24" printer but the Epson 7570 has gotten lots of criticism and the consistent opinion seems to be that the larger printers such as the P6000 and 7000, even the P5000, need to be run regularly or they clog. I know the Epson's have gotten better. I've used Epson since the 1270 dye printer. I don't often print large, for me 13x20 is a big print and like many, I have limited wall space. I would consider Canon but really like to use the QTR RIP for my monochrome prints and it runs only on Epson printers. Also I'm sure Canons have their own set of problems too though I do not have experience with them.

I've considered an extended warranty for my P900, a year is $179, and may just do that, but then I'm back with the refurbished approach if I have more problems. No one mentions repair for these printers. Are we at the point where $1K products are disposable?

Thanks Eric, lot of extraneous info there, but the gist is your printer broke at 6 months... hmm, so extended would not have mattered yet, still under 1 year, but this does make me think maybe I should get the extended.

BTW square trade is way better price that Epson price for that, but square trade , you gotta get it within 30 days so that option is too late for you.

Total BS on the refurbished advice you got. I did receive a refurbished and they are like new. Get that refurbished, and you problem will be solved.

Later I got a new one as well, so thats why I'm posting. Ideally I'd love to hear more from people who have these many years, not 900 I guess since too new... BTW 900 per an US Epson tech said it a newer technology that does way more than previous models.

I echo Eric's experience with his P900.  I had two, both had terribly unreliable feed for anything other than luster paper, especially in large sizes. Lovely print quality, provided the paper actually fed properly and wasn't marked.
Epson were great and replaced the first printer and when the second one was also a lemon, gave me my money back.
I have been advised that in New Zealand at least, our Consumer Guarantees Act means that extended warranties are unnecessary.

Thanks Bob, Frodo.. would you guys....
Well, if I plan on keeping this for years to come would you buy extended 3 year  warranty for $240 (squaretrade/ allstate that looking at) ?  The guy who sold it to me who is an authority, says it if makes it past first year, usually be good after that and does not recommend buying it.

( I suppose one could beg mercy to Epson at later date in year two or three, but who knows how that would go)

P800 for seven years now. Very reliable, except the roll feed isn't working anymore. Fortunately, I have an excellent print service down the road that will make panoramas when I rarely decide to do one, at an affordable price.

Benny, thanks.  extended warranties cars ok... what about printers that cost over $1200.00   ...  (also in light of your experience)

(obvioulsy would not ask for  $300 printers for documents...

Yes, the P900 is notoriously finicky about rear loading of thick papers. I have been creating a portfolio of 11x17 prints to pass on to my children, using Moab Entrada Natural which is a very thick paper. I have tried all the suggestions listed in this thread. What works quite well for me is just using my two hands holding the paper to apply pressure and slightly uncurl the paper at the bottom where it loads. I also give a slight uncurl to the long dimension. So far it is working (for now!!).
