iPhone 14 Pro Replacement for Canon 5D Mk III

I'm considering purchasing a new iPhone 14 Pro as I currently have an older iPhone XR.  I've never used it for serious photography, only snapshots.  I currently use my Canon 5D Mk III for any serious work that I do.  But am getting tried of dragging it out for "occasion" photography.

I currently use the Lightroom iPhone App to capture all my images in DNG and then download them via the cloud to process them in Lightroom.  I'm still planning on using this methodology as I've see a lot about the "in camera" processing that Apple does on it's images.  I am however open to suggestions as I will definitely do some testing on my own if I decide to take the plunge.

I personally don't think the iPhone can replace my 5D, but I know it's got to be better than my XR.

I have a 12pro. On the 14 you have the choice of 48MP on one of the lenses. I shoot RAW and then download to my iMAC M1 using airdrop and process in LR. You can use super resolution which I find good even though there is some aliasing that I can see if pixel peeping at 200%.

The 14 will obviously be better. It all depends on what you photograph and what you do with the final image. You will obviously loose telephoto and sport may not be easy. Can you afford to get a 14 before you dispose of the current system?  I know professional photographers the just use iPhones now.

If you want to use the Apple ProRaw and the 48MP capability of the main camera, then you will have to use the iPhone camera app. Do you own test to decide which one you prefer.

With my previous phone (iPhone 11  pro) I used exclusively the LR Camera app, but now I use almost always the iPhone camera and Apple ProRaw. I then import the images to LR (using cable as I am on PC). One adjustment I almost always do, is to reduce the sharpening in LR, as I feel the images from the phone are a little bit over sharpened, but that is a matter of taste.

I'm pleading ignorance here.  Why would I not get the benefits of the 48MP when using the LR iPhone app?

Thanks, for the reply.  I'll be doming mostly snapshots of my families events etc.  It will become my walking around camera for trips etc.

Will probably push the camera a little further once I see how it performs and the differences.  Doubt I'll ever get rid of my 5D, it's been my work horse for years but things do change.

Are you creating a sensor profile using the color rite color checker as well?

Hi,

The sensor in the main camera is not a regular 48MP sensor but a "Quad" sensor, where each group of 4 adjacent pixels have the same colour filter.

I don't know if Apple does not give access to third parties or if Adobe has not developed it yet, but with the LR camera you only get the 12MP image (treating each 4 pixels as one).

Even with the Apple camera, the 48 MP is obtained after post processing. The camera becomes very slow in this mode, so that's why you can chose 12 or 48MP in the iPhone, depending if you want fast response (use 12MP) or if you have the time for the best quality (use 48MP).

In low light (night mode) the iPhone switches to 12MP (low light is one of the main advantages of the Quad sensor type)
