As someone who has been known to have almost stepped on snakes on several occasions, I would not want to test whether these "snakes" are real or not. I suspect, however, that they are only snake-like.

I'm glad you didn't step on them. And I'm guessing they are, too.
Those snake -like shapes are actually a thick kind of algae that the wind rolls up into long round pieces.

Actually, I stepped on a black viper once. I was lucky as the weather was already cold and the poor guy was almost asleep and didn't react quickly.
Doing almost well… let's say: improving!
