Waterfall: No.9 Trolley Trail
« on: March 12, 2023, 01:54:09 pm »

A small stream runs along the No. 9 Trolley Trail that connects Catonsville to Oella and Ellicott City (Maryland). Depending on the season and rainfall, the stream can be anywhere from no-existent to a formidable torrent.

I have photographed the stream many times, but one of the best images I captured is this one taken a day after a major deluge in 2016, with the stream running at a fast clip. The waterfall wasn’t large; perhaps 6 ft in height, but majestically displayed against the pool it flowed into.

These days, this particular area has been fenced off, presumably because erosion has caused the banks near the falls to become unstable. You can still see the falls when conditions are favorable, but it’s much more challenging getting in close.

Your C&C is welcomed!

Very fine.

Great image… The waterfall is so elegant with the reflection and it's also perfectly placed in the frame. The whole image is well balanced. Processing is well done and appropriate, I like it very much.
Bravo, Bob.

Lovely, processing is spot-on I think. Have you considered a bit more of a crop?

Gentlemen: Thank you.

I did, but felt the result was too closed.

I like the composition the way that it is, with the curve of the waterfall and its reflection left of center echoing the opposing arc of the large rock and its reflection to right of center. If I were being obsessive (I often am), I might clone out the sticks and small bright spots at upper right, but that is a very minor thing. It's beautiful as is.

I remember flood that year that nearly took out the Main Street in Ellicott City.

Beautiful picture.  It goes to show how shooting in your own backyard can be as rewarding as flying to some fancy destination.  This could be a scene from Iceland.  I need to get back out on the trails.  I live in Frederick, not too far from you.

Thank you, Niranjan. Yes, that's true, and several of the buildings nearer to the river that were devastated by that flood remain unoccupied to this day.
