Winter jungle: LA snow today
« on: February 25, 2023, 08:00:04 pm »

Here are two different versions of a shot of the local snow-covered mountains off my back porch today, taken with a long zoom (CR2 source).

The Photoshop-composited pano was treated with ON1 Photo RAW 2023, the full frame with Radiant Photo. The pale original pano is included for comparison.

Thanks Eric! Ironically, the further you are from the mountains (within reason), the better shots you get. I took a ride today up the hill trying to get some new shots during a break in the weather, but didn't match this one yet.

Tomorrow I'll be 30 miles away, we'll see what that vantage brings!

All very nice but I have a preference for the 1st and 3rd shots. I find that the tighter frame is better suited to this landscape (but it's just a matter of taste and it's only valid for me).

Nice! I know what you mean about better shots from farther away. I often need to travel away from my intended subject when it's something on the scale of a mountain just to be able to get a reasonable view of it.
I like the first one the most.

Thanks Matt!

The secret is in the framing. It helps to have some foreground objects to break up the "mountain monotony". And a long lens to compress sit all.

You all may find this amusing – here is the wide version of my shot ;-)

I guess that you won't be surprised if I tell you that the last one (wide version) isn't my favorite ;-)

Yeah, the wide version doesn't have the gits of the others.

Wide version was just for reference ;-)

Today I was about 35 miles away and got lucky with the perfect view! Later on it hailed again down in this area before the sun returned.
