Finder issues - MacOS update Catalina to Ventura
« on: January 25, 2023, 02:05:33 pm »

My wife just updated her OS last night on her 2-year-old iMac 27" because of graphics driver issues with Photoshop - Catalina to Ventura. The graphics issues were resolved, only to open up another strange issue.

When she is in a program and wants to Save a Copy or Save As.., she has no issues doing so. Finder within InDesign, Photoshop et al shows what was always called on her iMac "Working Drive". (She hated that when she migrated to the new computer, this new "drive" appeared, but made peace with it.) However, if she opens Finder to find a file on her iMac, no "Working Drive" is listed anywhere. Her various external drives are shown where she keeps most of her various jobs, backups, etc., however, there doesn't seem to be a "Working Drive" listed anywhere. She only sees things like "Macintosh HD" which holds folders like "Applications", "Library", "System", or "Users". Working Drive is not located in any of these places or anywhere we have easily found.

Does anyone have a clue where this drive went in the system?

Suggest tap Mackintosh HD, then users, then select your user name. You should then see your data folders on the computer HD.

I am on Monterey on an M1 iMac and that’s what works for me.

Not sure what the issue or problem is.
In one capture, the folder is carol then sub foldres.
Working HD is the name of that drive on the iMac. She must have named it that. The dropdown I see matches the path shown behind the dropdown. What's the problem?

I would never upgrade three operating systems in one go, but as you have done it, good luck.
As to the problem, try the Finder preferences (Finder / Preferences ) and tick all of the boxes under General and Sidebar.

Thanks for the suggestion. That was the first place we looked, but it's not listed.

Thanks. She never renamed it. In fact, she was quite irked when "Working Drive" suddenly turned up when she migrated from her old Mac Pro to the new iMac. On top of that, it took several months to sort everything else out. She worked on both computers for a while. Migrating from an old computer to a new one used to be relatively painless on Macs. It seems no longer. The folder "Carol" doesn't exist anywhere we can find other than within the Adobe apps she uses. "Carol" exists within "Working Hard Drive" which itself doesn't seem to exist in the root of "iMac" which shows the drives attached.

That may be, but it is what it is. All boxes are checked. When she originally migrated from her old computer, the "Working Drive" was set up as a separate partition it seems, but now there doesn't seem to be a way to directly access that partition from Finder.

She can rename the boot drive (or any drive for that matter). Hard to believe the name came onto itself by itself. The default name would be "Macintosh HD".
She had to have made the "Carol" folder. And if there isn't anything in it, or its sub folders, she can delete it.
Again, I'm still uncertain just what the issue is here.

Apparently, it did come into its own after the transfer. The "Carol" folder, which did not exist under Catalina, seems to contain the "Working Drive" partition. But, neither of those can be seen when launching Finder, only from within an application like InDesign. Very strange. She did find a few things online that pointed to similar issues, but one referred to Carbon Copy Cloner. Anyway, as a workaround, she's created an alias on her desktop.

What partition? Someone had to do this and name them.
