Manual override of Epson P800 ink cartridge lid
« on: January 24, 2023, 12:57:07 am »

I have an unused Epson P800 that has been in storage a while. At first boot, the printer is stuck in initialization. I suppose I didn't shake the ink roughly enough. I cannot find the manual override of the ink cartridge lid. According to Epson, there is a small slot where I must push a screwdriver, or a stiff wire. I have poured over the service manual, and I have examined and poked every square centimeter of this printer, but nothing gives. Before sending this printer away for repairs, I wonder if anyone could confirm if there is indeed such a slot, and provide a photo where it's highlighted. If not for my sake, then for the greater good, for Google knows not this slot.

I have the P800 and I am not aware of any manual override. When You turn on the printer, push the button showing the ink drops (used for changing inks). It will have the option to release the cover. Hope this helps!

It is pretty simple. Lift the ink lid via the screen.
You will see two white plastic pieces near the bottom. If you look under the lid you with see the strip that goes in next to the two white plastic pieces. When the lid is closed the plastic strip will push those slightly to the left locking the latch. Take a credit card or something similar and stick it in to the right of the plastic and it will shove the latch to the left and you have bypassed the latch. That's it

Thank you for the replies, but unfortunately I cannot lift the ink lid via the screen, that's why I'm looking for the override. The printer is stuck in a special first boot process, which blocks all key presses ("invalid operation") when the ink cannot be pumped. I'm still waiting to hear back from Epson - they will check a physical P800 to verify the existence/position of the override slot.

I just heard back from Epson. The ink lid is not locked per se, it's just held back by a mechanism. This mechanism is designed such that you can use a screwdriver or similar to forcibly push open the lid. This will not damage the printer. Case closed  :D

I tried it you need no tools. Stick your four fingers under the right hand side of the lid and pry up slightly. Slide your fingers to the left side lifting slightly as you go.
When your hand gets about 6" left of the Epson logo the lid pops open. I tried it 3 or 4 times and it worked every time with no damage.
