Help with object selection tool

I have found this tool useful for selecting single objects, but selecting more than one does not work for me. The instructions say to hold down Ctrl (Windows system) while clicking the 2nd object, but this does not work. Any suggestions?

Several ways to accomplish this are in the video on Julieanne Kost's blog

The shift key is the normal modifier to add to a selection. After you make your first selection, hold down the shift key and you should see a plus sign in the dotted box in the bottom right of the cursor. Make your second selection and repeat as often as needed.
