What's happening?

Our hazel tree finally lost its leaves 3 weeks ago in a (to us) cold snap (-7C, 20F).  Now on Jan 6th and the temperature at 12C, we have catkins on it!  Weeks early, what is going on?

Nice shot… The meteorological situation is the same here, even at higher elevations!
